Perinchief calls OBA’s approach on gangs ‘reckless and ignorant’

National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief has fired off another salvo in response to Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier, as a war of words continues on the issue of anti-gang legislation in Bermuda. It follows the Shadow Minister of National Security, Mr Cannonier’s statement released on Tuesday in which he described the Minister’s current position on anti-gang violence legislation as “a flip-flop on a flip-flop”.He was referring to the Minister’s decision to again look at anti-gang legislation. In a statement yesterday Mr Perinchief said: “It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition has chosen to enter this debate late and to misrepresent my position on this form of legislation.“At no stage have I ever wavered in my belief that anti-gang legislation is a necessary tool for addressing the issue of gang violence.“My views, while widely known, have not been universally accepted. It is my task to persuade those not yet in support of such legislation and my comments indicate that I am renewing my efforts to do so.“As for a plan, this Government has assembled a team of dedicated professionals who deal with these issues every day and a clear focus on the required effort has been developed.”Mr Perinchief concluded: “The simplistic approach of the Leader of the Opposition is reckless and ignorant of the depth of these issues.“Their root causes and the manner in which they must be addressed deserve more than a cursory reference to any one programme and a general demand for more money.“The Opposition Leader’s statement indicates that he nor his team are ready or able to tackle the complex issues that confront Bermuda.”Kim Swan, in a joint statement with Charles Swan, the two sitting MPs for the United Bermuda Party, said: “We took the opportunity to highlight the Minister of National Security’s ‘double about face’ on the introduction of anti-gang legislation, but we are pleased his recent rethink brings him back on course with the unfortunate reality of gang violence that this country is facing.”Mr Swan said it was time to rise above party politics in Bermuda to deal with the “full brunt of the impact violence continues to place on the Island”.“For the record, Bermuda is not alone as there are other countries grappling with similar problems associated with gang violence.“Trinidad is one example of a country currently experiencing a high murder rate, where anti-gang legislation was recently introduced.“We are reviewing the legislation and have also shared it with the Minister. Our citizens deserve a Bermuda where our families, visitors and future generations can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil country.“We in the United Bermuda Party renew our call on all political parties, independents, churches, community organisations and activists to join with the Minister and come together in a truly bipartisan public/private coalition against the scourge of gang violence and murders.”
