$2.6m spent on security for schools

The Ministry of Education has paid out $2.6 million for school security such as CCTV cameras over the last year.The figure emerged after Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith and Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert answered parliamentary questions on payments to consultants since April 1, 2011.Security payments to Bermudian firm GET Limited topped the list for Education, followed by $738,0653 for testing materials from CTB McGraw-Hill, and $198,394 for syllabus provision, training and assessment from the University of Cambridge.Local consultants Expertise assisted school principals in the screening of applicants and hiring of new teachers, to the tune of $16,195, while Marva Allen was paid $13,370 to support “middle schools and students transitioning from middle to senior school”.Mr Furbert reported two local consultants hired for his Ministry.Kenneth Robinson of Talisman was taken on from September 1, 2011 to August 31 to assist in “the formation of policy and public service delivery in Bermuda”, plus helping to establish new business and “new ways of enhancing competitiveness”.Out of a maximum payout of $130,000, Mr Robinson had been paid $31,200 as of March 23.And consultant Graham Wood was contracted from October 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012, to a maximum of $49,000, as a privacy policy manager to assist in the development of privacy legislation, Mr Furbert said.
