MPs pass bill pushing boat licence period to April
MPs passed legislation changing the boat licence renewal period from December to April.Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Derrick Burgess told the House of Assembly yesterday that the Marine Board Amendment Act 2012 had been tabled to “align the licensing process with the start of the summer season”.Debate on the bill prompted United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan to ask whether legislation was needed to tackle disputes over the ownership of moorings.“It could lead to blows,” he said, explaining that sometimes two people claimed ownership of a particular mooring.Mr Burgess said the Island had “just over 5,000 moorings” and sometimes the ownership changed without Government being informed, which was when confusion occurred. “We encourage people to do it right,” he said. The Minister said there were almost 13,500 registered boats in Bermuda, including 101 Government vessels.Useful website: www.parliament.bm.
