OBA would invite PLP members to join Cabinet

Andrew Simons

Members of the Progressive Labour Party will be invited to sit in a One Bermuda Alliance Cabinet, the media was told yesterday. But it is unclear whether Health Minister Zane DeSilva would make the grade. At a press conference to announce the distribution of a policy brochure, OBA Leader Craig Cannonier reminded the media of his Throne Speech reply in which he said that he would be reaching out to the ranks of the Opposition to recruit some Cabinet members should the OBA form the next Government.“This is not about Bob Richards, this is not about the Premier, this is not about Derrick Burgess. This is about you, Bermuda,” he said.“I said that I would be seeking out PLP members to be a part of our Cabinet. Because we want to see that bipartisanship, that collective agreement, because we do not believe that solutions and ideas only exist in one party. Ideas and solutions exist within all of us,” he said.“And so we will be breaking down those walls and those barriers to ensure that Bermuda gets the best of the best.”Former United Bermuda Party leader Wayne Furbert, former PLP premier Alex Scott and PLP MP Dale Butler have expressed similar sentiments but no Government has actually had members of the Opposition in its Cabinet.“I said that a year ago. There wasn’t an election looming at that time. We know it is now,” Mr Cannonier said when it was suggested to him that such sentiments were only expressed at election time.He could not say which PLP members he could see in his Cabinet if his party won the election.“What kind of question is that? You’ve heard me say my hands are extended and that there would be communication between myself and the PLP.”He said he had given a “lot of thought” to who from the PLP would be in his Cabinet, but he was not prepared to share it with the public.Deputy Leader of the OBA Bob Richards said he fully supported Mr Cannonier’s desire to have members of the PLP in his Cabinet.Andrew Simons, candidate for Pembroke Central and an OBA spokesperson for Health argued in a lengthy speech on the impact of rising hospital healthcare costs on the cost of living, that the Health Minister had not been discharging his duties effectively.“The Minister has not really exercised the powers afforded to him” by legislation governing the hospital and health insurance, Mr Simons said.“There hasn’t been that pressure from Government on health costs incurred at the hospital.”At question time, Mr Simons said he, too, supported a bipartisan approach to governing the country. The OBA had attracted people from the PLP and those new to politics, he said.“There are people from both sides who command the respect of everyone. And, most importantly, there is a real shortage of talent on the Island, so this isn’t an idle election promise because the Island is so small and the need for talent is so great. And if that talent is across the floor then, as the Leader said, he’s extending his hand.”Would that pool include Mr DeSilva?“I said ‘talent’,” Mr Simons responded.
