Wall repairs finally get underway

Photo by Mark TatemMP Kim Swan stands qwith a sign near the collapsed wall on Wellington Lane. Work has finally gottne underway after repeated prompting from Mr Swan.

Repairs to a collapsed wall in St George’s have begun — more than a year after falling debris injured a motorist. The rock face on Wellington Lane collapsed due to the heavy rain in July, 2011, falling on top of Marvin Iris as he rode his motorcycle.Mr Iris suffered injuries to his back during the accident. His bike was also severely damaged.Residents of the area have been calling on MP Kim Swan to get Government to fix the cliff face ever since.Government insisted it could only put up a barricade in front of the damaged wall to protect motorists’ from falling debris as repairs to it posed “a significant technical challenge”.Mr Swan issued a further call this week to have the wall fixed.“Months ago Minister Michael Weeks gave me assurances that Government would repair the wall out of the budget allocated to repair dangerous walls,” he said.“I do not doubt that the work will be done but it is becoming a bit tiresome for area residents.“Residents have been waiting patiently but several near collisions in the area where Government have erected a huge barricade is making locals unhappy.”Government later announced that work was underway.“The Ministry of Public Works already have a team on site this week commencing with the work,” a spokesman said.Mr Swan praised Government for attending to the matter after it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.“I had spoken to Minister Weeks about the wall and he said it would be repaired under the dangerous walls vote,” he said.“The assurances of the wall getting done didn’t seem to be suffice with the election drawing near, but I have seen workers down there starting the job and I’m grateful to the Minister for getting on with the task.“The two previous Ministers have made it a point that this matter would be resolved, and for it to be underway now gives residents a sense of relief knowing something is being done about the safety of those who travel this road.“The new technology is being used so hopefully it all works out.”
