Pembroke East

The Progressive Labour Party’s Walter Roban easily won Pembroke East last night.He topped the polls with 525 votes compared to the One Bermuda Alliance’s Scott Stewart who only managed 114 votes. Mr Roban took 82 percent of the vote while Mr Stewart won 12 percent.Mr Roban was first elected to office in the 2007 general election.He said: “I would like to thank the voters of Pembroke East for validating my work and that of the Progressive Labour Party over the last five years. I will continue to do the work I have been doing since I was a candidate five years ago and I look forward to working with them once again in the foreseeable future.”Mr Roban was concerned by the low voter turnout. Some 642 people cast their votes yesterday out of a possible 1,064.“Voters are a precious commodity in our democracy. I believe that every citizen should exercise their right to vote. It is the most important process in our Country,” he said.This was Mr Stewart’s first foray into politics.He said: “First of all I would like to congratulate Mr Roban on his win and also thank the constituents for letting me into their homes. I was received with the utmost courtesy.”Mr Roban was appointed Minister of Transport in June of this year and previously held the posts of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy and the Minister of Health. He was first appointed to Cabinet in June of 2009 as Minister Without Portfolio.Mr Stewart serves as Chairman of the shadow Tourism Board.There were three spoiled ballots in Pembroke East.RESULTSWalter Roban (PLP) 525Scott Stewart (OBA) 114
