OBA rolls out Gurret and Jones as official candidates

First Prev 1 2 Next Last

Two more official election candidates were unveiled today by the One Bermuda Alliance.

Nicky Gurret, who stood in the last General Election, is the approved candidate for Constituency 18, Pembroke West Central, and Marcus Jones, who also stood in the last election, is the approved candidate for Constituency 19, Pembroke West.

Ms Gurret was educated at Warwick Academy, Paget Primary and Bermuda College and is a graduate of the Technical University of Nova Scotia and Dalhousie University with an architecture and science degree.

Nicky Gurret has been named as the One Bermuda Alliance’s approved candidate for Constituency 18, Pembroke West Central

She is a registered architect, certified building inspector and project manager and is the head of properties and facilities at the Bermuda National Trust.

According to an OBA statement, Ms Gurret “possesses extensive experience in building and planning and is a former head of building control with the Department of Planning and has worked as an architect in England and in Bermuda”.

“She has sat on the board of the Bermuda Architects Registration Council and on the council of the Alliance Française des Bermudes for 25 years and has twice served as president.”

Ms Gurret is also a former artistic director with the Bermuda Film Festival and is the founder and organiser of the Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition, along with the Beach Art Festival and PechaKucha Bermuda. She has published two books on floral art and beach art.

Marcus Jones has been named as the One Bermuda Alliances’s approved candidate for Constituency 19, Pembroke West

She was an avid sailor for many years, having taught sailing for the government programme at White's Island, eventually becoming head sailing instructor and receiving certification for teaching through the Canadian Yachting Association.

The statement said she believes that “it is imperative to design affordable housing for Bermuda and that each house and commercial building on the island should become more self-sufficient”.

“Each house under building code regulations is required to have a water tank. The same regulations could be applied to solar panels for homes and solar panels and small vertical wind turbines for commercial and industrial building.

“This could drastically reduce the need to obtain electricity from fossil fuel and reduce Belco emissions and in the long run reduce costs for all residents.”

Ms Gurret lives in Pembroke with her 92-year-old mother, husband and two young adult children.

In his late teens, Mr Jones served as youth director in his local church, mentoring the next generation to spiritual awareness.

As a parent, he served as PTA president for his alma mater West End Primary school and in Bermuda’s Foster Parent Programme. He also cofounded the Cook’s Hill Neighbourhood Watch to enhance safety and quality of life for his local community.

Mr Jones, a married father of two, obtained a BA in economics at Trent University, Ontario and, returning to Bermuda, he added several hospitality management diplomas at Bermuda College, before a 25-year career in hospitality, working in jobs ranging from waiter to general manager.

He was the director of finance of the Novotel Toronto Centre in Canada and a general manager who oversaw the opening of three hotels in Bermuda: The Wharf Executive Suites in Warwick, Grape Bay Beach Resort in Paget, and 9 Beaches Resort in Sandys.

In 2018, he served as an opposition senator and subsequently was appointed Opposition Leader of the Senate. He was forced to quit the Senate last year over remarks saying teenagers were “putting themselves in harm’s way” by posting inappropriate images.

He said: “Our community faces many challenges and I believe we must bring people together to overcome them. I am committed to advocating tirelessly for the residents in my constituency and Bermuda as a whole.

“A cause which is close to my heart right now is saving West End Primary from being axed by the Ministry of Education in its education reform. The school has been a pillar in the community for decades and should remain intact in its current form.”
