Taxi fare increase promised in Throne Speech
An increase in taxi fares will be announced during the Throne Speech, the Government hinted.
The increase will underscore this year’s theme of “Serving the People”, which will target public services.
A government spokeswoman said: "The theme of year’s Throne Speech is 'Serving the People', with an emphasis on improving service delivery in key areas that have been identified by the people for improvement.
“Government will also signal a taxi fare increase.”
Taxi drivers have protested twice over several longstanding problems that mounted throughout the year.
Drivers have brought up frequently how they have not had a rate increase in almost ten years.
Frustrations also grew after repeated demands for larger taxis and more permits were said to have been ignored.
The Bermuda Taxi Owners and Operators Association raised concerns in the spring over vagueness around the possibility of competition in the form of freelance cabs.
The Convening of the Legislature will take place this morning on Cabinet Lawn on Front Street, Hamilton.
Rena Lalgie, the Governor, will set out the Government’s legislative agenda for the next year.
