Adventist churches to hold health expo

Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist church on King Street, Hamilton.

The Health Ministries Department of the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Churches are sponsoring a "Good Health in One Package" Health Expo being held tomorrow from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Youth Centre on King Street.

This expo is aimed at the whole family, so everyone from seniors to children are welcome.

Valuable information on everything from health to finance will be available.

There will be health professionals, all under one roof, supplying screening and counselling services, where one can receive instant screening results of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body measurements, and eye exams!

"We feel it's important for the community to be able to ask health professionals about things they're concerned about in a relaxed atmosphere," explained Melanie Furbert of the Department of Health. "You don't have to make an appointment.

"We have health professionals within the church who are willing to give counsel after health screenings. Some things you would have to pay quite a bit of money for if you went to a professional in their regular setting."

Activities and booths planned for the day include a take-home health analysis that you can use to make changes to your lifestyle or discuss with your doctor, registration for the annual walk/run/cycle race, a children's health corner complete with activities using go-karts, as well as free recipes and food samples.

"Because of the times we are living in, we'll even have a finance table to share tools on how to survive in these difficult times," says Mrs. Furbert. "In addition, we'll have people providing advice on parenting and marriage."

One very popular event that people can register for is the Coronary Health Improvement Programme (CHIP).

CHIP is an affordable, four-week lifestyle education programme with thousands of graduates worldwide. It is sponsored by local, certified leadership; is community based; and has a strong, ongoing support system.

CHIP encourages a close working relationship with one's personal physician.

"We just want people to have an opportunity where the entire family can come and enjoy (these sessions) at their leisure," explains Mrs. Furbert. "We decided on this time so that more people should be able to come."

She adds: "We always want to give tools on eating well, exercise, finance and family life.

"We want people to be able to make the changes they need to live better and/or talk with their personal doctor or health professional."

Some specialists that will be offering their services include Dr. Joann Cousins-Simpson, Dr. Ronald Lightbourne, Dr. Leonard Gibbons and optometrist Dr. Samms.

There will also be plenty of nurses on hand to assist with the activities of the day.

Other professionals include teachers, accountants, family life instructors and even teenagers to offer assistance throughout the day.

"These professionals are the ones behind this event," laughs Mrs. Furbert. "They are very enthusiastic about helping the public."
