France Classic Rugby took a significant step towards clinching World Rugby Classic title glory after sealing a second successive victory, overcoming Classic Canada 34-3 at North Field, National Sports Centre.

Having got off to the perfect start with a comprehensive 22-0 opening-day win over Lions Legends, the French produced another dominant display to condemn Canada to their second straight loss and end their title challenge.

The championship could be decided today, should Bermuda suffer defeat by the Lions. However, if Jamie Barnwell’s side can make it back-to-back victories, it will come down to a mouthwatering winner-takes-all clash between the two unbeaten sides on Saturday.

“Winning two games from two is obviously very, very good because when we started the competition we wanted to come here and win the title,” said Jean Claude Phillipe, the France Classic Rugby team manager.

“Maybe the Lions will win against Bermuda, but we are focusing on winning on Saturday, whatever happens, because we want to win all three of our games and make history for the team

“If Bermuda do win, we know we have a big final on Saturday and that will be more very exciting for everyone. I think I would like this to be the case because it would be great to have a proper final for the teams.”

It was Canada who came close to breaking the deadlock in the third minute but Jordan Tait’s 55-yard penalty attempt fell just wide of the posts.

That appeared to spur France into action and within seven minutes they were ahead with the first try of the evening. Seizing on a poor pass, Rida Jahouer took full advantage, intercepting the ball before crashing over. Mathieu Amoros successfully added the conversion to give his side a 7-0 lead.

Just a minute later, Canada reduced the deficit with Tait this time slotting between the posts with another penalty attempt, but France almost immediately responded through the boot of Amoros to regain a seven-point advantage at 10-3.

With 20 minutes played, Tait spurned another penalty attempt and they were made to rue his missed kick as France added a second try just before the interval. Receiving possession, Laurent Baluc Rittener broke through the Canadian defensive line to score in the left corner. Amoros failed to add the difficult conversion as the French took a 15-3 lead into half-time.

Immediately after the restart, Amoros spurned a penalty opportunity, but soon after the advantage was extended with another try through a brilliant individual effort from Thomas Soucaze. Collecting the ball off the back of a lineout, the Flanker evaded three challenges to score under the posts. Amoros added the simple conversion to take the scoreline to 22-3.

Another difficult penalty opportunity was missed by Amoros, but he was soon given another kicking opportunity as France scored another try in the left corner through Elvis Vermeulen. This time the full back was successful with his boot, taking the score to 29-3 with two minutes remaining.

However, with Canada deflated, there was just enough time for France to score a final unconverted try, as Vermeulen once again capitalised on space in the Canadian line to race away and crash down, making it 34-3, to cap another impressive performance from his team.
