Kirklands set new mark in ‘Round De Rock’

Jesse and Zander Kirkland said they were overjoyed after breaking their own record in the ‘Round de Rock’ Part II, sailing around Bermuda ten minutes faster than their best. The brothers set out on Thursday from Hogfish Beacon in Spanish Point, aiming specifically to set a new record and achieved that goal comfortably, finishing in a time of three hours, 37 minutes, four seconds.“It was an extremely rough sail around today (Thursday), especially along the south shore where there were big swells and a punchy 18-22 knots,” said Zander.“The breeze direction was South-South East, so it meant the ever awkward beam reach for the majority of this tough leg.“We left our safety boat in the dust as we skipped over the waves and the boat felt like a bronco, frequently jumping in the air with the flying fish, with just the rudder in the water.”The pair said they could could have gone even faster had it not been for flipping the boat near Whale Bay that left the record time in the balance for the remainder of the event. While pleased with the time, older brother Zander believed that they could have broken the three hour barrier.“We had a great sail going until the approach to Whale Bay, where we had a dramatic pitchpole and flipped the boat. Our time at this point was two hours, 18 minutes.“The pitchpole was hard to avoid as the waves were shoaling up as they approached the shoreline. The wipe-out left us with a broken main halyard and a missing tiller extension.“From there we limped into the finish in the Great Sound with a jury rig to get her across the line.“We were on track to go sub three hours around the Island but we now know we need the right wind direction to do it right, and it just makes for a hairy sail.“This goes down as Jesse and I’s most extreme sail in any boat.”The pair return to San Francisco next week to wrap up their training as they build up towards the World Championships, which is their first Olympic Qualifier, in Perth in December.
