Rockal Evans remained in the top half of a formidable fleet on day three of the Ronstan International Finn Australian Championships in Melbourne yesterday.

The Bermudian started fourteenth among the 40-strong fleet but was unable to make any headway in the light and shifty breezes on the waters of Port Phillip Bay.

Evans placed twelfth and fourteenth in the two races contested and after the first drop came into play, his day came full circle in terms of his ranking in the overall series.

“I had two average races which were long again, like 70 minutes each,” he said.

“There was less wind and waves and a 15-degree shift at times, so very tricky.

“My boat handling was good and I had two great starts.”

Evans is among the strongest fleet to compete at the regatta, which includes Giles Scottt,, an Olympic Games gold medal-winner and America’s Cup sailor, who has led the entire way so far.

Scott competed for British challenger Land Rover BAR at the 35th America’s Cup which Bermuda successfully hosted in 2017.

The Ronstan International Finn Championships, being hosted by Black Rock Yacht Club, finishes tomorrow.

Evans has made Australia his training base as he bids to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

The 30-year-old is bidding to follow in the footsteps of his late grandfather, Howard Lee, who represented Bermuda in the single-handed Finn dinghy at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

The Finn is the longest serving dinghy in the Olympic Regatta and is regarded as the most physical and tactical single-handed sailboat in the world.
