Sailing duo hoping to end campaign on a high

Setting sail: Siblings Cecilia and Michael Wollmann are hoping to end their Nacra 17 campaign on a high in their final race at the Pan American Games

Siblings Cecilia and Michael Wollmann are hoping to end their Nacra 17 campaign on a high in their final race at the Pan American Games today.

The pair, competing in the mixed multihull for the first time at a major competition, finished seventh, sixth and eighth in La Bahía de Paracas yesterday. They are eighth in the standings.

“We had good starts today but didn’t have as good boat speed as the wind was a bit lighter,” Cecilia said.

“We had some ups and downs, so I think the results balanced that out with us finishing in our normal placings.

“We only have one race tomorrow and we’re hoping for good wind. Overall, we’re happy with how we’ve done. All of the teams are full-time except us as we are both completing school at the moment.”

Michael added: “It has been a great experience and we have improved. We look forward to a good last race tomorrow.”

Benn Smith also completed three races yesterday, placing eleventh, sixteenth and nineteenth in the Laser class. He is in seventeenth place in the standings.

“There were good points and bad points,” Smith said. “I’m definitely feeling more confident.

“In the first race today, I rounded the top mark in fourth place, but I picked the wrong side on the downwind and ended up getting past by five or six boats. It was a tricky upwind and I ended up finishing eleventh, which was my best result. I’m still not happy with losing that amount of boats.”
