Illness delays Nahki's arrival
Nahki Wells’ arrival at Carlisle United has been delayed until next week due to an illness picked up by the young striker last weekend. The former Dandy Town player is set to remain in his current Yorkshire base until the bug passes and he will now join with his new teammates on either Monday or Tuesday next week, the club’s website reported yesterday.First team coach, Dennis Booth, said: “I spoke to him and he wasn’t well at all, so we decided that it’s better to keep that illness away from the rest of the squad at this moment in time.“He was due to come up today but, with the travel and his condition, it wouldn’t have done him any favours. It’s better for him and us if he gets himself right before coming to start to work with us proper, hopefully early next week.”The Bermuda international, 19, enjoyed two trial spells with the Cumbrians in the last two months and was due to put pen to paper on New Year’s Day.In an interview last month, Carlisle manager Greg Abbott said: “Nahki has spent a bit of time with us and has done well, but with the weather and his commitments with his studies we haven’t quite been able to see him as much as we would have liked.“Having said that, he has shown us an excellent attitude and has demonstrated he has a bit of quality, so we’ve decided to bring him back so that we can take a much longer look at him.”“He definitely has quality, but the idea is that we’ll get him here and see whether he can progress to become better than what we already have.“The challenge for him now is to come here, work with us full-time and show us what he can really do.”Former English professional Mark Ellis, the coaching director at the UK-based International Academic & Soccer Academy (IASA) where Wells had been attending since August, recommended the former Bermuda Hogges player to Carlisle.n Free agent Khano Smith will be hoping to get re-signed by another club over the coming weeks. The Bermuda international was not picked up in either of last month’s re-entry drafts after being left unprotected by New England Revolution. While veteran Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis secured a contract extension last month and third-year ‘keeper Bobby Shuttleworth was recently elevated to the senior roster, several of their teammates will be heading into the 2011 preseason without agreements in hand.Smith and Nico Colaluca, as well as keeper Preston Burpo, remain eligible to return after their contract options were declined and were not selected in the re-entry draft. However, it appears the Revs are in no rush to re-sign any of the trio, the New England Soccer Today website reported earlier this week.
