No place like home for Colts' coach Smith
Devonshire Colts coach Keishon Smith will be hoping ‘there’s no place like home’ when his side play their first match of the season in front of their own supporters at Police Field this weekend.Resurfacing work at Police Field forced struggling Colts to play all nine of their Premier Division matches before Christmas away, picking up just four points on their travels. On Sunday, they return to Police Field to take on Boulevard for the first of nine straight home games, with Smith confident his team can lift themselves off the bottom of the table and survive the dreaded drop.“We’re looking forward to a home game that’s for sure. It’s probably the first time a team has played all of their games away from home during the first half of the season,” said Smith.“It feels good to be back at home. Hopefully we can get some positive results in front of our own supporters.“Playing at home often gives you that little bit of luck and hopefully we can pull together and put ourselves in a good position in the league.”Smith believes the improved Police Field pitch will also aid his team’s passing game as they go in search of only their second win of the season against Blazers.“Because Police don’t have a cricket team anymore they have taken out the cricket pitch which should make it a lot better,” he said.“It was a good surface already but it should be even better without the cricket pitch being there. Hats off to the guys for getting it ready and now we’re looking forward to playing on it.” Colts whose PDL team finished runners-up in the Christmas Tournament have lost seven of their nine matches so far this season but are still only three points behind Somerset Eagles in eighth position. And Smith remains optimistic that his team can pick up the points needed to stave off relegation from their remaining nine games.“If we’re prepared to do the work we should be able to take care of ourselves,” he said. “This is the business end of the season for all of the teams at both ends of the table so it should be interesting. The PDL Christmas tournament gave us a chance to keep up our match fitness and we’ll keep our fingers crossed we can turn things around. At the end of the day we’ll see where we fall.”Colts take on Blazers at Police Field at 3pm on Sunday.
