Village out to end title rivals’ hopes
North Village skipper Sammy DeGraff wants his team to end their Dandy Town hoodoo and put some distance between themselves and the defending champions. The two sides clash in a crucial title showdown tomorrow, and a win for league leaders Village would realistically put them beyond Town’s reach.Village hold a five-point advantage over second place PHC and are seven points ahead of the champions heading into the weekend. However, it’s the champions who hold the psychological advantage over their city rivals, having beaten them twice already this season, in the league, Rams’ only Premier Division defeat so far, and also dumping them out of the FA Cup in a replay. For skipper DeGraff, tomorrow’s encounter is a match his side can ill afford to lose. And he readily admits a draw would do his side just fine.“We really just want to come out and give it our best effort, right now we are a few points ahead so we have a little bit of leeway so a draw would be good for us,” said DeGraff.“We just want to go out and make a good account of ourselves.“They beat us in both the games we have played previously this season, and we have talked about this game and about not coming in with a chip on our shoulder.“Knowing we are on top, we want to execute our game plan and the main thing is not losing, so it is a big game for both sides.“They have gotten the better of us already and there is something that they are doing that is successful so our main thing is to come out and work hard.“A draw would be good for us because we are on the road and it wouldn’t allow us to lose any advantage we have on them.“That is the focus and we will see how it goes.”A win for Village would see the side go ten points clear of Town and all but push them to the outskirts of the title race with only PHC having a realistic chance of catching the side.If Town win, however, it would give the champions extra –confidence knowing that the gap is closing and they have a real shout of clawing themselves back into the title hunt.DeGraff, for one, isn’t concerned with the what ifs that will come about after game, just the result that would put his side in a position to lift the title after the game.“A ten point gap over them would really depend on their mindset should they lose, but if they win it will certainly be a confidence booster in that they are closer to us then at the beginning of the day and for us it will still be a situation of still being in the drivers seat so for us it is to not lose.“We will see how the chips fall and hopefully they are in our favour.“It wouldn’t be a sense of relief if we win, I would say it would be more of another league game, we are already in a good position, and it would be another step closer to our goal which is to win the league.”Elsewhere, Devonshire Cougars travel to Wellington Oval to exact revenge on St. George’s after the new boys beat the Big Cats at the ‘Den’ in the first fixture between the two sides.PHC meanwhile will look to take advantage of any slip up by Village when they go to Police Field to lock horns with Devonshire Colts. The other fixture of the day sees Southampton Rangers welcome St. David’s to Southampton Oval. All matches begin at 3 pm.
