Bermuda sink ten man Guyana

Bermuda 3 Guyana 0Bermuda made a winning start to their Under-20 World Cup qualifiers with a convincing victory over Guyana in their opening Group E game yesterday.Gary Darrell’s side took the lead early on at the Franklin Essen Stadium through Dandy Town striker Dante Leverock after good work down the right wing by Casey Castle. After the break Guyana were reduced to ten men when a defender was sent off for a late tackle on Bermuda’s scorer Leverock. The big marksman was unable to continue following the reckless challenge and was replaced with Dunte Albouy, who doubled Bermuda’s lead midway through the second half.Somerset Eagles midfielder Troy Tucker then competed the rout with a strike late on.Head of delegation Cal Blankendal said it had been imperative for the team to win their opening qualifying match and praised them for an impressive performance.“Guyana had a few chances early on but Tahj Bell made very good saves to keep the scores level. I have to give praise to the coaches Gary Darrell, Devarr Boyles and Derek Broadley because the team looked tactically sound. We could have won by more to be truthful.”Blakendal also gave Tucker a special mention for his workaholic performance in the centre of midfield.“Troy played very well and kept the pressure on their team high up the pitch with some good tackles,” he said.“Then there was Reggie Lambe who knew when to slow the game down and when to speed it up. I thought Roger Lee and Reiko Trott also stabilised us at the back. It was a good team performance.”Bermuda will be hoping Leverock can recover from his bruised leg in time for tomorrow’s match against Netherland Antilles.“Physio Craig Brown will be treating Dante so hopefully he will be okay for our next game,” said Blakendal.Darrell’s side take on hosts Surinam on Sunday. The nation that tops Group E will join automatic North American qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States, Central American qualifiers, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador as well as fellow Caribbean qualifiers Cuba, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Trinidad and Tobago in the 12-team Concacaf Championships in Guatemala in April.Four of those teams will qualify for the Under-20s World Cup which runs from July 20 to August 20 in Colombia.Bermuda Under-20s went unbeaten in their previous round of qualifiers last October, defeating Antigua and drawing with hosts Guadeloupe. But they missed out on automatically qualifying for the Concacaf Championships because Guadeloupe had a superior goal difference.Bermuda’s starting XI: T Bell, A Hunter, R Trott, R Lee, J Bather, C Castle, J Swan, T Tucker, R Lambe, Q Maynard, D Leverock
