PHC look to crank up pressure on top dogs Village

PHC Zebras can go top of the Premier Division tonight for 48 hours at least if they defeat Devonshire Cougars at –Devonshire Rec.Zebras are just two points behind leaders North Village who travel to Southampton Rangers on Sunday looking to bounce back from their loss to Dandy Town last weekend.A win against Cougars on their home turf is no easy task but PHC skipper Omar Shakir believes the incentive of taking top spot will be all the motivation his team-mates need.“I’d say that every game is important for us for several reasons. It goes without saying that we want to keep pressure on the leaders and to also try and move away from teams below us,” said the Bermuda international.“But just as important is the need for consistency in our results and our game play. We want to establish a positive rhythm which will help the team’s confidence and the psychological effect that can have is immense. Although, I imagine that is every team’s goal.”No side has ever won a title midway through the season and Shakir believes it is important for PHC to concentrate on their own performances rather than focusing on the results of those teams around them.“Seeing us win could put Village under pressure or it could galvanise them as a team to get a result in their game,” he said.“Seeing us lose could give them confidence to increase the gap or it could lull them into a false sense of security.“PHC would do well to ignore what Village will think or do based on our result, but simply focus on our game to ensure we play well enough to get the result we desire.“Even if we don’t get all three points there are still many games left in the season and anything can happen on any given Sunday. We’re just taking it one game at a time.”Shakir missed the start of the season through suspension and admits it has taken him a while to get back into the swing of things.“For me, coming off suspension and having to play games happened a bit more quickly than I would have hoped. I didn’t have my pre-season training as I normally do and I wanted to be able to ease my way back into the team,” he said.“Plus, other players were having good games and we were getting good results so I didn’t want to disrupt the flow of the team.“Nevertheless, I wasn’t complaining when I played my first game because I love football and I’ll play every chance I can get and it didn’t hurt that I played in my beloved central midfield role.“Most people know me as a defender but those who’ve known me for a while know better.”Tonight’s game begins at 8pm.n Bermuda Under-20s take on Netherland Antilles today in their –second Group E match in Suriname.Gary Darrell’s side beat Guyana 3-0 in their opening game on Wedneday with goals from Dante Leverock, Dunte Albouy and Troy Tucker.Netherland Antilles lost their opening game against Suriname 2-1.The nation that tops Group E will join automatic North American qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States, Central American qualifiers, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador as well as fellow Caribbean qualifiers Cuba, Jamaica, Guadeloupe and Trinidad and Tobago in the 12-team Concacaf Championships in Guatemala in April.Four of those teams will qualify for the Under-20s World Cup which runs from July 20 to August 20 in Colombia.
