Hornets keep title dreams alive

St George’s 1Dandy Town 4Dandy Town kept their slim title hopes alive with an easy win at a wet and windy Wellington Oval. The defending champions gave hosts St George’s a lesson in how to cope in horrendous conditions, although they still needed a couple of blunders from Colts goalkeeper Nico Trott to get them on their way.Trott gifted the visiting team a two-goal headstart, allowing a 40-yard free kick from Seion Darrell to float over his head, before conceding a penalty moments later.Darrell bagged a second with another long-range effort midway through the second half, before substitute Lashun Dill rounded off proceedings deep into injury time when he crashed the ball past Trott from close range. At the other end, Jahron Dickinson and Alan Dougals gave Town’s defence a few nervy moments, mostly though St George’s limited midfield lacked the necessary wherewithall to breakdown their opponents. And David Signor’s strike 20 minutes from time, after a couple of minutes of pinball in the Town area, was never likely to be any more than a consolation.Things might have been different if St George’s had only had to cope with playing 11-men, but they also had to contend with a howling gale, something which they were not equipped to do.To their credit Richard Todd’s side tried to play football, but their lightweight team rarely succeeded in getting the ball beyond the centre circle. That it took Town until the closing stages of the first half to score had as much to do with a well-organised Colts defence as it did with the champions’ struggles to come to terms with the weather. When they finally got the breakthrough they had been threatening it was no surprise that the wind played a part. Darrell was brought down wide on the right, and he sent a floating ball into the box which Trott misjudged, and then could only watch helplessly as the wind carried it over his head.Moments later Trott was again involved, this time he conceded a penalty after failing to gather a ball that Town striker Raymond Beach had pushed too far in front of him. In the ensuing scramble to rescue the situation Trott was Adjudged, somewhat harshly, to have denied Beach a goalscoring opportunity, and Damon Ming made no mistake from the spot.St George’s opportunities were few and far between, although Town goalkeeper Treadwell Gibbons did have to race off his line to clear the danger when Dickinson got clear as the first half drew to a close.Town were much better in the second half, with Darrell a constant threat down the right, and Ming and Beach causing all sorts of problems in the middle. It all got a bit much for Colts as the game wore on, and while Phillip Parsons was the only player booked, central defender Mel Warren can count himself lucky that he didn’t receive that, or worse.Still, by the time Warren got involved in a bit of pushing a shoving, Town were three goals to the good after Darrell had cut inside from the right and unleashed a cracking shot that beat Trott all ends up.Signor’s consolation goal was mainly down to the persistence of substitute Clay Darrell, who gave Hornets defenders Fabian Frankson and Kemon Tucker a difficult final 20 minutes. The home side though just couldn’t find the final pass when it mattered, and Dill’s late goal merely served to underline Town’s superiority.St George’s: N Trott, E Signor, M Warren, D Signor, P Parsons, G Wade, O Bascome (C Darrell, 60), C Simmons, J Dickinson, J Hayward (M Crane, 80), A Douglas.
