Cougars pair backing Simmons to make the grade in England
Devonshire Cougars duo Kwame Steede and Domico Coddington have backed team-mate Lejuan Simmons to make his mark at English non-league side Bromley FC.Simmons, 17, has been a revelation at the ‘Den’ since coming through the club’s ranks, making his debut two years ago.Steede, who has known Simmons since his early days at the club, said he was thrilled to see the speedy winger given a chance to prove his worth overseas and believed it could only be good for the Island to have him plying his trade abroad.“This is a good thing for Bermuda, not just Cougars,” said Steede. “I think he will make it, he has the right attitude. He is hungry for football, I’m really proud of him.”Steede, a former Bermuda skipper, hailed the new crop of Bermudians playing in England such as Reggie Lambe, Nahki Wells and Quadir Maynard and hopes more overseas scouts will take note of the talent on the Island.“We have a lot of players out there, Reggie, Quadir, Nahki, and now Lejuan. It can only get better, the guys that are currently in England will only make local football better and in return get more scouts here to take more younger players away, we have a lot of talented youngsters,” Steede said. “The more we have playing abroad the better it will be for the national programme.”Cougars captain Coddington echoed Steede’s sentiments regarding Simmons’ desire to further his footballing education.“It’s a good thing for him to go away and play overseas, that’s the dream of any footballer,” said Coddington. “I know he loves the game and this will be a good step for him and hopefully he works hard and takes advantage of the chance he has been given.”Coddington is no stranger to the international scene, having had trials in Italy, England and the United States and knows how hard it is to make the grade.“I’ve been out there and know what it takes and it isn’t easy,” he said. “But Lejuan is very talented and has a lot of potential so I’m sure he will make it.”The move will see Simmons train full-time while continuing his academic studies in the same two-year programme that former Boulevard winger Maynard began last year.Simmons spent this week on trial with the Conference South side after being recommended to them by former Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley.Another Bermuda player Broadley has linked up with an English non-league side is Blazers winger Angelo Simmons.Simmons, 23, has joined Ryman Football League team Carshalton Athletic until the end of the season after impressing during this week’s training. But he missed the transfer deadline by a few hours and will only be eligible for their reserves. He is set to make his debut today and Broadley, who will accompany Simmons to the game, has urged the striker to make the most of his opportunity.“He actually missed the transfer deadline for the first team but he can play for the reserves. Their coach, former Wimbledon player Ian Hazel, likes him and they’ve said they will definitely have him back at the start of the season. I think Angelo’s a confidence player and he played very well in training so I’m very pleased for him.”
