Former football greats on show

Past football greats from St. George’s and Somerset will take to the pitch at Somerset Cricket Club today to play in the 18th annual R.O. Smith Veterans All-Star game. The match will see the likes of Stevie Riley, Kevin Bailey and Stevie Dickinson put on their boots again.Organiser David Brangman said he was pleased to see the match head into its 18th year, noting that the valuable knowledge gained from a match like this could help the next crop of footballers coming through.“I think it is nice for the guys to come out and play in these types of games. They give the past generation of footballers a chance to reunite and have knock about in good spirit,” said Brangman.“We will also have a presentation after the game in which we will honour a few players from the past, and it would be nice for the public to come out and enjoy the festivities.“The younger guys can also get chance to see who paved the way for them and know about the players from the past.”There is no admission for the match, however donations are welcome.“Last year we raised $1,000 and it went towards tours for clubs’ youth programmes, this is one of the things we would like to continue to do,” added Brangman. The game kicks off at 3 pm at Somerset Cricket Club.
