Opportunity knocks for Bell
When the Bermuda national cricket team land back on the Island tonight, they will be returning without Damali Bell. The young fast bowler is only flying as far as the UK with his team-mates as he will be spending the next six months training at the Kent Cricket Academy.Bell has been awarded one of the National Junior Athlete Scholarships, and is delighted to be getting the chance to train with some of the leading experts in the game.“I’m thrilled to be going over there to participate in something like this,” said Bell. “I think it’s a good opportunity for me to better my skills and also help out Bermuda in the future.“Coach Moore has set me up with one of his coaching links, and I’ll be out there for six months.”An injury to Malachi Jones thrust Bell into the spotlight at the World Cricket League Division Two tournament, and, while expensive on occasions, he also took seven wickets. His raw talent, alongside his raw pace was what first attracted the attentions of ICC High Performance Manager Andy Pick, and saw Bermuda head coach David Moore earmarked him for further development. Both are also quietly confident that Bell has the ability to carve out a career for himself as a professional cricketer.“I am extremely pleased that Damali has been awarded with this scholarship,” said Moore. “He is a hard working individual who shows commitment and dedication in practice and during games.“Damali demonstrates good behaviour both on and off the field and is a positive member of the national team.“The Kent Cricket Academy has been very successful in enhancing the performance of players offering first class coaching from leading experts in the game and has had numerous graduates play for county teams and for England. I look forward to watching how he develops with this opportunity.”Moore will be accompanying Bell during his arrival at Kent, to make sure he gets settled. Once there, Bell will be immersed in learning all aspects of the game and will be seconded to a Kent League side to play for them during the summer.“On behalf of the Board I would like to congratulate Damali on winning a National Junior Elite Sponsorship Award,” said Bermuda Cricket Board president Reggie Pearman. “Damali was earmarked by the National Coach, David Moore, and High Performance Manager and Specialist Bowling Coach, Andrew Pick, as having raw natural talent, which if developed he has the potential to pursue cricket as a professional career.“In addition, I would also like to take this time to thank the Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation for providing Damali with this opportunity and for their continued support of our talented players and Bermuda’s athletes.”
