Bermudian joins USA team to play in top youth tourney
Bermuda’s Daryl Lounds is set to play in the world’s largest youth tournament the Gothia Cup for a United States Under-18 select team.Lounds, who has dual citizenship, arrived in Sweden yesterday for the prestigious annual competition, which attracts more than 1600 teams from 70 nations.The 16-year-old, a former Dandy Town and Young Men’s Social Club player, was called up to the 365 Sports team after impressing college scouts last season.His mother, Ronette, is thrilled with her son’s achievement and said he had ambitions to represent the US at the highest level.“Daryl is very excited to be part of this team as he knows he is representing Bermuda and the USA,” she said. “He wants to thank the coaches in Bermuda that stood by him and always gave him encouragement. He has been training hard for this event and is hoping for the best.“None of his family are able to go with him to Sweden but we will be keeping up to date with everything he does. We say put your best foot forward Daryl and have fun.”Lounds, who plays as a striker or winger, went to school in Bermuda until he was 12 and now he plays for Lay County Soccer Club in Jacksonville, Florida.He is also on the Florida team with the Olympic Development Programme.The Gothia Cup, held in Gothenburg, started on Wednesday and runs until July 24. Players aged between 12 and 18 are taking part.Lounds was invited to join the US side by the 365 Sports programme, which is based in North Carolina, and directed by ex-professional, collegiate and youth development coaches.Since 1984, members of 365 Sports have administered sports programmes for thousands of US student athletes to over twenty international destinations.
