Arsenal's Jason Davis chases the ball after his team's keeper Jason Smith fails to collect during last night's ISL final at the National Sports Centre. Arsenal beat Knights 6-5.

Arsenal 6Knights 5Arsenal claimed their first Island Soccer League title with a win over Knights at the National Sports Centre to exorcise the ghosts of last year’s final defeat. The newly-crowned champions, who lost in last year’s final against Storm, beat Keishon Smith’s team by just one goal last night in a closely contested match that could have gone either way.Fabian Frankson grabbed a double while Logan Alexander, Ralph Bean, Cecoy Robinson, and Jason Davis all scored for Arsenal. Ian Coke bagged a brace for the runners-up with Keston Lewis, Robert Richardson and Lozendro Symonds chipping in with solo strikes.Arsenal coach John Barry Nusum admitted he was a bag of nerves on the touchline such was the intensity of the encounter. “This is the game that every fan wishes for; it went back and forth, neither team had a two-goal cushion until late in the match and this was one worth watching,” he said. “I was losing my hair on the sidelines and I don’t have any. It was a game worthy of a final.”Robinson put Arsenal ahead early on before Coke scored his first of two goals on the night to level matters. The sides traded goals with Alexander and Bean both giving Arsenal the lead only to be wiped out by strikes from Lewis and Symonds.Davis’ goal was followed by Frankson’s first, which gave Arsenal a little bit of breathing space, but a Richardson goal and Coke’s second again levelled the game. The telling point would prove to be Shayne Hollis’ missed penalty which would have given Knights their first lead of the night. It would come back to haunt them as Frankson grabbed the winner midway through the fourth quarter for Arsenal. “Each time we scored they answered right back, and that’s a good thing because it kept the game exciting,” Nusum added.“Knights are a very good team and have come from behind to win on several occasions this year. We were trying to hold on each time but they continued to fight to get back in the match.“To be honest, this was a game of luck and either team could have won this game.”
