Coach Brown sweats as Trojans put up a fight
Devonshire Cougars coach Dennis Brown cut a relieved figure following his team’s narrow victory against a bellicose Somerset Trojans at Devonshire Rec.Brown led Trojans to promotion last season before quitting to take the reins at ‘the Den’.And the new Cougars coach would have been starkly aware anything less than a home win in yesterday’s Premier Division match would have left him more than a little red faced. It would also have cranked up the pressure on both Brown and his players who this season have already been well beaten by North Village in the league and Southampton Rangers in the Dudley Eve.Ultimately those fears were allayed when Cougars’ match-winner Jamie Smith bravely bundled in Che Brangman’s looping cross midway through the second half.Brown admitted that at this stage of the season putting points on the board was more important than entertaining the supporters, some of whom exchanged angry words with the Cougars players at the final whistle.“We knew we had to win today. If we have any aspirations of being among the title contenders we have to keep up with North Village,” said Brown, who hauled off Mark Steede and Mark Smith both before half-time as part of a tactical switch.“Trojans certainly made us work for the victory although I thought we settled down after we scored the goal. We looked a touch tense in the first half and maybe the players are putting too much pressure on themselves.”As for Trojans, they can take plenty of encouragement from their battling display and arguably deserved a share of the spoils, having threatened the Cougars goal throughout the match. And had Johnny Bean managed to find the target with a glorious first-half chance then perhaps the outcome would have a very different story.Bean did everything right after latching onto a long through ball, outmuscling Cougars defender Zeiko White but prodded his effort wide past onrushing goalkeeper Clyde Darrell. With Kwame Steede pulling their strings in midfield, Cougars looked more relaxed in possession in the second half and got their just rewards when Smith broke the deadlock on 70 minutes with a towering header.Devonshire Cougars: C Darrell, J Butterfield, S Pearman, K Franks, Z White, Moses Steede, M Smith (K Tucker, 40), J Smith (J Mouchette, 72), L Simmons, Mark Steede (K Steede, 35)Substitutes not used: K Trott, J Smith, K GoddardGoals: J Smith, 70Bookings: TuckerSomerset Trojans: S Bean, J Rogers, Z Iris, D Seymour, T Ming, T Harvey, J Harvey-Outerbridge (J Simmons, 78), J Scott, J Bean, T Wade, M Jones (L Burgess, 75)Substitutes not used: V Blanchette, L Burgess, A Trott, D Lister, A EbbinBookings: L BurgessReferee: L WilsonMan of the match: J Butterfield (Cougars)St. George’s Colts 2Dandy Town 3Dandy Town returned to winning ways with a hard-fought win over St George’s at Wellington Oval yesterday.Raymond Beach, Jamel Swan and Shawn Brown all found the net while Allan Douglas jr and Clay Darrell scored for Colts.Beach fired Town ahead in the 24th minute before midfielder Swan added a second five minutes into the second half.Douglas reduced in the 55th but Brown snatched his first of the campaign to restore the two-goal advantage.Darrell scored deep into the second half but it was too little too late as the visitors celebrated their first league win of the season.
