‘It won’t be easy’ warns Wells
Bradford City striker Nahki Wells is bracing himself for what he anticipates will be a gruelling encounter with Guyana in tonight’s World Cup qualifier at the National Sports Centre (NSC).As unbeaten Group B leaders, Guyana will enter the match as favourites. But Bermuda are made of sterner stuff these days as Trinidad learned the hard way last week. And Wells, who netted the deciding goal against the Soca Warriors, is confident the Gombey Warriors can again rise to the challenge against the Golden Jaguars in a match they must win if they are to keep their 2014 World Cup qualifying dream alive.“I’m sure Guyana will be tough but I definitely feel that we can beat them,” said Wells.Wells said Guyana would have plenty of incentive to do well against Bermuda.“They are in a good predicament because if they beat us they are probably a point off qualifying and so they will come here looking to win,” he said. “I’m sure they have in the back of their minds in their two games against Trinidad that realistically they probably wouldn’t win.”Guyana won the first encounter against Bermuda 2-1 at home. It was a scoreline that Wells found to be flattering.“In Guyana I felt they weren’t as good as the result looked,” he said. “We just had a few mental lapses that gave them the win in my opinion.”Following the narrow defeat, Bermuda coach Devarr Boyles had plenty to say about the pitch conditions in Guyana. The former Bermuda international partly blamed the loss on a cricket strip that ran through the middle of the park which he felt hindered his team’s performance.Wells agreed.“It was difficult for me to operate throughout the centre of the pitch down there down and so I had to work around it,” he said. “But playing at the National Sports Centre will be better for me because I can get my shots away. I know up at the stadium on a wider pitch I will get my chances and hopefully I will take them.”Having hit the target against the Soca Warriors, Wells hopes to pick up where he left off against Guyana tonight.“As an attacking player scoring goals always helps your confidence and so right now I feel pretty confident I can shake the net again,” he said.Wells has also urged the public to get behind Bermuda as they fight to keep their World Cup qualifying hopes alive.“We definitely appreciated the support we had the other night against Trinidad,” he added. “Hopefully we can have a packed stadium against Guyana.”
