‘I blame myself’ skipper Smith
Skipper Khano Smith laid the blame for Guyana’s equaliser squarely on his feet as Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying hopes were smashed last night.Smith was the defender who allowed substitute Ricky Shakes the space to put his header past goalkeeper Freddy Hall to leave matters deadlocked at the final whistle.Acknowledging the mistake he had made, Smith made no secret of his disappointment in the result.“It is deflating to let in a goal after scoring to put us ahead in a must-win match,” said Smith. “I think I should have done better because the guy was behind me and when the ball came over I lost it in the lights, and I didn’t want to jump too early and give him a clear run.“I know Freddy (Hall) is kicking himself for letting in the goal but he is the best goalkeeper we have had in a long time, maybe ever, and I may take some flack for saying that but he had a great game, played well so the result is not on his shoulder.“Sometimes a mistake can cost a side and tonight it did, I’m sick to my stomach with the result but we have to move on.“A few of the Guyana guys told me, including their captain who was out for the match, that we deserved to win so it’s unfortunate.”Although the result wasn’t what Smith wanted, the captain hailed his team-mates for their never-say-die attitude and determination. With a team that has a mixture of youth and experience and a wealth of up and coming youngsters, Smith believes that the future is bright for the country.“I think we started well in the second half, we did that against Trinidad as well, but we didn’t get the job done and it was unfortunate.“I’ve never been in a Bermuda side that has shown this much heart and commitment, and we have a good mixture of youth and experience.“We have Reggie (Lambe), Nahki (Wells) and the younger guys that are coming through and we were really unfortunate to not get the win, but it’s an honour for me to lead these guys and we still have two more games so we will play until the end.”Looking back at the campaign, Smith believes the side have only themselves to blame with, particularly with their earlier results on the road against Trinidad and Guyana.“Getting results early in the campaign is important as we can see, in the Trinidad match I don’t think we should have gotten a point but with Guyana we should have beaten them both home and away.“The crowd was awesome, I have been playing for Bermuda for a long time now and this ranks high up there with the best homes games I have ever played in.“The crowd was great and it’s a pity we couldn’t give them the win.”
