Late header breaks Bermuda's hearts

Flying the flag: Bermuda's supporters at last night's match against Guyana.

Bermuda saw their World Cup qualifying hopes go up in smoke after shooting themselves in the foot during last night's must-win match against Guyana at the National Sports Centre.Devarr Boyles' side were on the verge of throwing the Group B qualifying race wide open having taken the lead midway through the second half when John Barry Nusum headed home from a corner kick. But with just ten minutes to go they suffered heartbreak when Guyana levelled through substitute Ricky Shakes to slam the door shut on Bermuda's aspirations of advancing to the next round. It was a poor goal to concede and one which will haunt skipper Khano Smith and goalkeeper Freddy Hall who both had culpable parts to play in Guyana's gut-wrenching equaliser. The draw leaves the Golden Jaguars six points ahead of Bermuda whose remaining two matches, a home and away double-header against Barbados, will now resemble nothing more than an exercise in playing for pride.Trinidad, who play Guyana twice next month, are five points ahead Bermuda having beaten Barbados 4-0 last night, and regardless of the various permutations from those final fixtures, Bermuda can only finish second at best.Boyles made only one change from the side which stunned Trinidad 2-1 four days' ago with Lashun Dill dropping to the bench in favour of former Ipswich Town winger Reggie Lambe. And the hosts were immediately on the front foot when Antwan Russell intercepted a sloppy back pass, racing through on goal only to blaze over the bar with his weaker left foot in the first minute. It was the only chance worthy of note for Bermuda during a cagey first half which saw both teams fail to find any passing fluency and cutting edge in front of goal.Although Hall cut a virtual spectator in the opening stanza, Guyana did twice threaten Bermuda's goal through ex-Stoke City defender Leon Cort, whose glancing header flew inches wide while Vurlon Mills ensured hearts were in mouths when he put a free header over the bar on the stroke of half-time.Moments earlier Bermuda had suffered a scare of a very different kind when defender John Barry Nusum dropped to the ground clutching his troublesome knee in the wake of a robust challenge. The three thousand or so supporters who packed into the NSC feared the worst when Nusum was stretchered off, only to give the veteran a rousing applause when he returned to the action a few minutes later.Whatever Boyles said to his players at half-time seemed to do the trick with Bermuda having far more urgency after the break.Lambe threatened soon after the restart, weaving his way into the box before curling his shot over the bar.A hooked through ball by substitute Quadir Maynard then sent Nahki Wells clear on goal, but the Bradford City striker took the ball too wide when rounding keeper Ronson Williams affording Guyana's backline valuable time to recover.Had Wells chosen to go down after Williams made slight contact with him then referee Rudolph Angela may well have pointed to the spot. As it was, Bermuda didn't have to wait too long after than incident before taking the lead with Lambe forcing a save from the feet of Williams to win a corner for his side. From the ensuing flag kick, Nusum rose the highest to firmly plant his header past Williams and send the home crowd into raptures sensing their team were on the brink of pulling off another memorable win.But disaster struck on 80 minutes when a seemingly innocuous cross from deep caught Smith flat-footed in the left back position, with Shakes peeling off the Bermuda captain before beating Hall at his near post with a header.Bermuda had a chance to go in front late in the game, but Nusum and Nahki Wells both shot straight at Williams in the final minute.Guyana coach Jamaal Shabazz praised Bermuda's “big heart” and believed a share of the spoils was a fair reflection of the game.“I thought Bermuda played with a big heart, a lot of patience. I thought the game was played in a good spirit with good aggression and I think the result was a fair one,” he said.“It was a lot closer than I thought it would be, but we always knew coming in to the game it would be difficult to leave with three points and I think the game proved just that.”
