Dear Sir,I think the timing of an Inquiry into our cricket comes at a good time. I also think the Inquiry Panel is a good one based on their public and social experiences. The Inquiry will need to focus on the players just as much as the administrative side of the BCB in order to get it right. We do not need to spend money on players who are rude and disrespectful; players who play for themselves and not their country or their club; players who want to play only when the team is going off the Island; players who for the most part laugh in the faces of coaches and administrators; players who are content to play domestic cricket because they do not have to be drug tested and who can play County and Cup Match no matter what.Well, my feeling is that we should stop the international cricket and start afresh when and if players' attitudes change.Every year cricket gets worse, the players' behaviour towards the game, towards the umpires and towards each other. If umpires stop working, there will be no cricket at all. There are many reasons why umpires do what they do, but none of them do it for a living, so they do not need to spend countless hours brushing up on the rules, attending meetings once a week (which is more than some players train), stand in the sun all day and be subjected to abuses from players, most of whom do not know the rules. We have been embarrassed by players in overseas matches many times in the past and the behaviour is getting worse.Do we think after all the bad press we have had this year with matches stopped because of players' behaviour and players being put before the Board that players are going to be looked at as nice boys or gentlemen when we play international matches. We were talked about on SportsMax when a local match was stopped. The commentators were smiling as if it was funny.I didn't think so and I hope you didn't.One player who was given a suspension for bringing the match into disrepute said via the press that he had apologised to the umpires and his team-mates. I ask, what about his apology to his club and what part do the clubs play in the behavioor of theirs players? They seem to be reactive and not proactive.Let me say here, that I am not for a moment talking about every player. We have some very well mannered and serious players who serve cricket, themselves and Bermuda well and I tell them so every chance I get and so should you. Some of the problem players have weeded themselves out over time (a good thing) but we can't wait for that to happen, we need to take them out.For the readers who ask, what happened to working with the problem players? I can tell you that all staff, managers and coaches of the BCB bend over backwards to help problem players and every other player, no matter who or what.Players get many chances and opportunities to straighten themselves out but remain a problem. You all would be proud to know of the efforts taken to get the best out of players, on and off the field. One of my pet peeves is taking a problem player on tour wether it is behavioural, physical or otherwise because we have so few to pick from. We will all agree that many of our best players are also our problem players.I would really like to hear what the MCC tour officials and coach Moore truly think about players' attitude and reluctance to play during this tour knowing that it is a practice tour for upcoming tournaments. We are even using the assistant coach to make up the team. It is pathetic and should never be. Would the MCC want to come back soon knowing that Bermuda cannot field our best teams to compete against, and that we our trying to make up a team just before game time?As their spokesman said, they are here to assist us in preparation of tournaments to come. They can always come back to play golf. I'm just joking. I saw them playing at Riddell's Bay on their rest day and all I can say is, cricketers have a hard time trying to hit that is not moving, smile!!This poor turn-out response must be heartbreaking for coach Moore. He has had many disappointments with players this year. We cannot even get our best team to play at home. There seem to be too many other attractions and distractions for players. If you attended any of the weekend tour matches, you would have heard players in deep conversation about the English Football League while they are waiting to bat and you will see the same players come off the field after scoring very few runs with a big smile on their face and maybe even continuing to discuss the football game. The Inquiry Panel have a lot of work to do when they get going. Cricket is not all about the money. The BCB accounts is a very small piece of the puzzle.GERALD L BEANPaget
