Naive Bermuda need to become more ruthless, says Boyles
Bermuda coach Devarr Boyles admitted his players were naive in their World Cup qualifier against Guyana and must learn to protect a lead however slim.Against Guyana, Bermuda had to settle for a share of the spoils after throwing away a winning position, conceding a sloppy late goal that crushed their qualifying hopes. It was the second successive match Boyles had seen his side concede in the last ten minutes and he believes they must develop a ruthless streak when victory is in sight.“I think we still play the same way whether we’re in the lead or not. That’s something we need to take back to the training ground and do a lot more work on,” he said.“To be 2-0 up against Trinidad and concede the way we did shows we need to learn something. It was the same thing against Guyana, we conceded from being in a position of profit and we must learn to manage our game situation better.“We do some drills with the National Academy’s younger players which help them learn how to protect a lead that’s part of our syllabus. But, while you can replicate situations on the training pitch, I think a lot of learning comes from game experience.”Boyles has moved to sprinkle some perspective on Bermuda’s qualifying campaign and insists they can take plenty of encouragement from their performances against Trinidad and Guyana at the National Sports Centre.Had he been told prior to those games his side would secure a four-point haul, including a stunning 2-1 win over Trinidad, Boyles would have been “over the moon”.“For us to have done so well against Trinidad and Guyana, scoreline wise, is fantastic,” said Boyles, Bermuda Football Association’s youth director. “I think if we can do something against Barbados the whole region will take notice of us.“The Trinidad win was beyond expectations, we knew we were going to do well but to win the game in the way we did was very encouraging.“When you put things perspective we’re over the moon to take four points from those two games. I don’t think a lot of people backed us to that degree because there weren’t any indicators to say that was possible.“We now want to turn the NSC into a fortress and ensure teams are lucky to leave with a point.”Although Bermuda’s remaining two qualifiers against Barbados next month are ‘dead rubbers’ in terms of the qualifying picture, Boyles wants his side to finish their campaign in style to boost confidence ahead of next year’s Digicel Cup.Before then, Bermuda will play a friendly against yet to be confirmed opposition on February 29 a fixed date for FIFA international matches while the BFA will use Bermuda Hogges’ season to step up their Digicel Cup preparations.“The players were disappointed but said they felt the group was very good and believed it was important for us to stick together, finish this series, and then prepare for the next big one, the Digicel Cup,” he said.“They feel they have a fantastic chance of getting to the final stages of Digicel and the Bermuda Hogges format will also help us prepare because we will have games in quick succession.“We will look to take advantage of the next international dates. Hopefully our performances over the last four games show we can compete and will help us attract quality opposition for more matches.”Bermuda’s next qualifier is at home against Barbados on November 11. Kick off is 3pm
