Cougars cruise to victory

Devonshire Cougars 2 Boulevard Blazers 0Devonshire Cougars cruised to a comfortable victory over Boulevard Blazers last night. The home team never had to get out of first gear against a poor Boulevard side that lacked a midfield or attack, and created just one serious chance in 90 minutes of uninspiring football at Devonshire Rec.Cougars were little better, although they had no need to be, and second half goals from Kwame Steede and Chris Caisey was enough to seal the points. The magin of victory might well have been higher if it werent for a couple of smart saves from Blazers goalkeeper Randy Broadbelt and several last-ditched tackles by skipper Ajani Gibbons.Blazers were largely the masters of their own downfall and after surrendering the midfield almost from the first whistle they then played far too high up the pitch, allowing the pacey Lejuan Simmons and equally quick Domico Coddington to cause chaos in their backline. That Cougars did not take full advantage of the space that was afforded to them rather until more than an hour of the game had gone summed up the scrappy nature of last night’s encounte.Neither team succeded in stringing more than two passes together before giving the ball away, and in a niggly opening a series of promising moves broke down when the final ball inevitably failed to beat the first defender. What chances there were came from defensive errors, and Broadbelt did well to deny Jamie Smith after Korvon Tucker’s cross found the striker unmarked in the Blazers penalty area.Broadbelt’s opposite number Che Clarke had one of the quietest nights he is likely to experience this season, and the only save he had to make all game was to block a shot from Gibbons after a rare Blazers foray forward. The second half largely mirrored the first, except this time Cougars made the visiting team pay for their defensive lapses and Steede put his side ahead in the 61 minute when he got to Simmons’ cut back first and crashed the ball past Broadbelt.Coddington should have made it two soon after when he got clear down the right, cut inside the box and then completely fluffed his attempt at a shot and chipped it into Broadbelt’s hands.Ill-equipped to challenge for the ball in midfield, Blazers were totally impotent upfront and never seemed liklely to threaten as the game drew to a conclusion. All that was left was for Caisey to take advantage of another awful piece of Blazers defending three minutes from time when he reacted first to a hopeful ball down the middle and was played onside by Robert Wilson, who was still retreating from Cougars’ previous attack.Dev Cougars: C Clarke, J Butterfield, Z White, J Seymour, M Steede, C Caisey, K Steede, D Coddington (J Mouchett, 77), L Simmons, J Smith (S Brangman, 55), K Tucker.
