Brazilians to hold coaching camp
Coaches from top Brazilian club Cruzeiro will be visiting the Island for the Bermuda Brazilian Football School’s annual mid-term coaching camp next week.Future Ronaldos and Maicons, who both learned their trade at Cruzeiro, will be able to improve their Samba skills at the clinic, which will be held at BAA Field from October 24 to 28.BBFS director, Cal Blankendal, is thrilled to have secured the services of some of the best youth coaches in Brazil, who will be sharing their knowledge with up to 90 boys and girls, aged 8-15.“It all came about when I was at the leaders in football conference at Chelsea and I bumped into a guy who has a sports management company in Holland,” said Blankendal.“Just by chance I mentioned I was trying to get some Brazilian coaches over (to Bermuda) and he told me he had links with Cruzeiro. So I said ‘what about bringing them here’ and he said that shouldn’t be a problem.“Cruzeiro is the club where the likes of the Brazilian Ronaldo and Maicon among others started their careers you really can’t get any better than that.“They will be bringing a former player, a technical director and two coaches to work with Dennis Brown and our other coaches.”While European football remains the biggest influence on the Bermudian style of play, Blankendal believes it’s important the Island’s youngsters are exposed to different styles of football.Since their inception in 2009, the BBFS have sent players and coaches to the UK, Holland, Germany and Canada to gain more experience, both on and off the pitch.“It’s all about bringing top quality people to the Island. We’ve had the youth development director from Chelsea visit and now we have the Cruzerio coaches coming over; it’s all about the quality not quantity.” he said.“We want to keep the Brazilian theme going. On the Island our football is a lot more Eurocentric based but we’re just trying to offer the children something different.”Cruzeiro have been Brazilian champions twice, domestic cup champions four times (a record shared with Grêmio), and Mineiro champions 35 times. They are the only Brazilian team to have won the domestic triple crown of Brazilian football or treble, for winning the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the Copa do Brasil, and the Campeonato Mineiro in the same year, accomplishing this feat in 2003.Internationally they are the second most successful team in Brazil with seven international championships, including two Libertadores. The camp will run from 8.30am until 4pm, at a cost of $150.Blankendal said there were only a few places left in the 13 and over group. For more details visit www.bermudabfs.com.
