Manders and Capital FC set for Canadian Championship final
Taurean Manders and his Capital FC side are on the brink of capping off a memorable first season in the Canadian Soccer League after reaching the Championship final. The Ottawa-based outfit thrashed Serbia White Eagles 5-0 in last weekend’s play-offs to advance to the showpiece match where they will play Toronto Croatia away.Having already beaten Capital FC twice already this campaign, Manders accepts the odds are staked in Toronto’s favour whose artificial pitch should further enhance their home field advantage. However, after dispatching White Eagles in such emphatic fashion, the 24-year-old is adamant that there will be no shortage of confidence in his team’s dressing room heading into the final.“We are definitely happy to be playing in the final but we know it will be a tough match for us against Toronto Croatia,” said Manders, a virtual ever-present this term.“They beat us two-nil both times this season and are a very strong physical side with a few good technical players. We will have our work cut out but we will do what we need to be ready.“We have to go away to Toronto to get a victory and it will be a bit different going from our home grass field to field turf. But we are training all week on field turf to get a good rhythm for the game.”Only a victory against Toronto would come close to topping Manders’ current season highlight: a stunning 2-1 over Trinidad in a recent World Cup qualifier for Bermuda. The North Village man played a key role in that shock win and will almost certainly be included in Devarr Boyles’ squad for Bermuda’s upcoming home and away double-header against Barbados next month.“This has definitely been a good year for me with playing here in Canada and also my first World Cup campaign for Bermuda,” said the versatile defensive player.“The win against Trinidad has been the highlight so far. So I’m excited for the weekend and hope I can cap off a good footballing year for me with the CSL Cup.“My folks will be there and it’s always good to have familiar faces in the crowd, let alone family members.”Shaun Harris, Capital FC’s head coach, has urged his players to treat the final like any other game and to not become overawed by the occasion.“Our organisation has been supportive, the Capital City fans have been the best in the league and our players have worked very hard for each other all season,” said Harris, a former Everton assistant.“At any level, no matter where, getting to a championship final is something you should be proud. But we are going to treat this like any other match but at the same time enjoy it because opportunities don’t come often in a players career.“If you want to go to a championship game you have to have eleven very good players on the field, everybody has to do their part.“Manders, the son of ex-Bermuda national team cricketer Andre Manders, signed a one-year with Capital FC at the start of the season after impressing during trials.Capital City finished third in the CSL regular season, seven points behind second place Toronto, who play at Centennial Park.
