‘Not good enough’ Boyles
Devarr Boyles expressed disappointment with Bermuda’s performance against Group B whipping boys Barbados and believes his team should have killed the game off far earlier.Bermuda missed a host of second half opportunities to increase the 2-1 scoreline in what became a largely one-sided affair after Barbados goalkeeper Jason Boxhill was sent off in the 25th minute.Reggie Lambe, Damon Ming and Kwame Steede were all guilty of squandering gilt edge scoring chances to put the game to bed, leaving Boyles bemoaning his side’s lack of penetrative threat.“The result was what we wanted but the performance wasn’t what we were looking for,” said Boyles. “I’m disappointed with some aspects of our play and there are a several things we have to work on.“But credit to the players for coming back from a goal down and finding a way to win the game, which is what we had to do. However, we didn’t do well enough with the ball and must find other ways of going forward.“We also got caught out at the back a few times and made some poor decisions when in possession.”Boyles, who handed several players their first international starts in yesterday’s game, moved skipper Khano Smith into an uncustomary central defensive role alongside fellow veteran John Barry Nusum. The Bermuda coach said he made the shift so to maximise the former MLS winger’s range of passing and to strengthen the spine of his team.“We brought Khano into the central of the park to try and get him on the ball as much as possible,” said Boyles, who took over as Bermuda coach at the start of the World Cup qualifying campaign.“We wanted to get our wingers going forward and to have our full backs pushing on, and Khano’s range of passing enabled us to do that.”Barbados coach Colin Forde maintains his team could have got something out of the game had they not been reduced to ten men when keeper Boxill was dismissed.Boxill was sent off for bringing down Bermuda winger Damon Ming to change the landscape of the game, with Smith stroking home the equaliser from the ensuing penalty kick.“It was a good game, we had it under control early on with the goal and I thought we were playing very well,” said Forde, whose side took the lead in the seventh minute through Diquan Adamson.“Unfortunately we got a player sent off and conceded a penalty so that put us behind in a sense for the rest of the match.”Forde maintains his side can reverse their fortunes and leave the Island with a win in their final group game on Monday.“I think Monday will be a bit better on our part, we will play with 11 men obviously and that could alter things as well,” he said.“They did have chances but that was after we were down and we will look to bounce back on Monday and leave with a win.”
