Dandy Town 5

Somerset Trojans 1

Veteran striker Raymond Beach struck a second half hat-trick in Dandy Town’s mammoth victory over Somerset Trojans at St John’s Field yesterday.

Hornets took an early lead through Damon Ming who let fly with an unstoppable piledriver from distance which gave Trojans’ Andrew Jjombwe no chance.

Trojans, however, hit back almost immediately when Jalai Butterfield’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected past Hornets’ keeper Treadwell Gibbons via the outstretched boot of Dion Stovell.

It didn’t take long, though, for the hosts to restore their advantage with the lively Angelo Simmons cutting in from the left before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top corner.

Just before half-time Trojans frontman Jonathan Bean had a chance to give the scoreline parity but his glancing header drifted just wide of Treadwell’s right hand post.

Nothing went right for Trojans after the break with Michael Corday’s side finding themselves two-goals adrift when Beach opened his account for the afternoon.

Although his one-on-one effort was initially saved, Beach was afforded a second bite of the cherry and made no mistake, prodding home the rebound from close range.

A moment of madness from Hornets’ keeper Gibbons then gifted Trojans a way back into the game when he committed the cardinal sin of not playing to the whistle.

Expecting referee Anthony Francis to blow for offside following a mazy dribble from Stovell, Gibbons dwelled on the ball for far too long allowing Bean to nip and steal it off his toes.

Francis, who had played advantage because Jahi Simmons although in an offside position was not interfering with play, did blow up for a penalty, though, after Gibbons attempted to make amends for his error by dragging Bean to the ground.

Much to Gibbons’ relief, however, Trojans midfielder Leo Burgess saw his spot kick cannon off the crossbar with Hornets then increasing their lead when Bean bagged his second, turning home a neat cut-back from Simmons.

By now Hornets were buzzing and should have extended their lead when substitute Ray Butterfield Jr missed an absolute sitter with his first touch after replacing Ming.

Just yards out, and with the goal at his mercy, Butterfield somehow managed to hit the post when it would have been easier to score, but did recover to play a part in Beach’s third which saw the striker sweep his shot past Jjombwe in the final minute.

Hornets coach Jomar Wilkinson praised the “extra punch” provided by Ming and Angelo Simmons, who tormented Trojans’ backline throughout yesterday’s clash.

“It was a team performance but Angelo Simmons and Damon Ming certainly gave us some extra punch,” he said.

“Our problem has not been creating chances it’s been putting them away but Raymond Beach was certainly on form today. Our destiny is still in our own hands but we may have to beat North Village twice to win the title.”
