Russell spot kick keeps Zebras on top of table

PHC 1 Robin Hood 0League leaders PHC Zebras gave a substandard performance, yet it was good enough to give them victory over visiting Robin Hood in this Digicel Premier Division game at Southampton Oval yesterday.Antwan Russell sealed the points for the home side with a well-taken penalty after 27 minutes after he was brought down in the area. But while the points saw the Zebras re-establish their lead at the top of the table after Town had gone ahead of them on the strength of a win against Devonshire Cougars on Friday night, it was far from a championship performance by the Warwick club.Although his team vaulted back to the top, coach Brian Anderson can hardly be satisfied with his side having had to struggle against opponents they should have effectively brushed aside relatively easily instead of being forced to sweat it out for the points.Robin Hood were able to pull off a few spirited counter attacks late in the game that came close to handling them the equaliser.Zebras struggled because they had no vision in the box where there was indecision by their front players far too often. And when they were in position to score, their finishing was simply awful. While having the better of the exchanges in the first half, Zebras rarely bothered Jason Simons in the Hood goal. But at the other end of the pitch Hood also accomplished little up front giving Troy Hall in the Zebras goal an relaxing opening half. After 18 minutes Simons, though, was forced to dive to his left to push away a header from Shakir Smith after a cross from Aquino Grant. And two minutes later Kevin Lambe put a Lonnie Bascome cross inches wide from 16 yards. After the deadlock was finally broken when Russell was floored and netted from his spot kick, Zebras should have taken full control but their attacking methods led much to be desired and the Hood defence were able to end most advances without much difficulty.Hood gave the home team a scare right from the kick-off to the second-half when Druwande Bascome, sighting Troy Hall off his goal-line, send a long blast goalwards that the Zebras’ keeper leaped frantically to tip over the bar.PHC slowly settled down and came back into the game after 57 minutes when Lonnie Bascome’s show from 25 yards was sensationally saved by the diving Jason Simons. Three minutes later Zebras continued to press and could have scored when substitute Cecoy Robinson’s was wide from 16 yards.Hood slowly found some sort of momentum, while being unable to take any real sort of initiative, and it was substitute Dunte Albouy who watched in agony as his fierce effort from 10 yards saw Hall dive to his left to block the shot and deny the visitors a surprise equaliser.Hood’s revival lasted for a 10-minute period before Zebras re-established their superiority but were still unable to take advantage.Their best scoring chance came after 75 minutes when substitute Cecoy Robinson provided a defence-splitting pass for Russell whose angled shot was brilliantly saved by the diving Simons in the Hood goal.PHC: T Hall, C Robinson, K Griffith, C Dowling, J Ball, K Lambe (M Piper, 77), J Sealey, L.Bascome, A Grant (C Robinson, 55), A Russell, S Smith (J Swan, 55).
