Lambe signing could open the door for others

If Toronto FC boss Paul Mariner has his way then Reggie Lambe won’t be the only Bermuda footballer playing in the MLS.Lambe finally completed his long-awaited move to the Reds last week and Mariner believes more of the Island’s players will follow in his footsteps in the not too distant future.Toronto and the Bermuda Hogges already have a football development agreement and Mariner sees the potential to expand that Island-wide.“We see lots of potential in Bermuda,” Mariner told MLSsoccer.com. “There’s a lot of very, very good young players (that are) 14, 15, 16 (years old)”One of the problems for the Island’s younger players is that they don’t always have the chance to fully develop their potential and Mariner said Toronto might be able to help in the future.“It’s something that we’re exploring,” he said. “There are some unbelievable athletes. The infrastructure is not quite there to have the players progress.“The outlooks for them are very limited and we just feel we might be able to fast-track a couple of guys further down the line and that we can help TFC and hopefully help international football.”The impression Lambe made on the Toronto coaches may have something to do with Mariner’s desire to see what other gems he can unearth in Bermuda. It took all of 20 minutes for head coach Aron Winter to decide that Lambe had a lot to offer.“I’ve been tracking Reggie Lambe for years, ever since he was at my old club Ipswich,” Mariner said. “It took Aron all of 20 minutes to work out that he’s (Lambe) got something.”Lambe’s pace certainly got the club’s attention and Mariner is hoping he can add some electricity to Toronto’s attack on either wing.“He will play wide on the right and wide on the left,” Mariner said.
