Thompson’s teenies the future for BAA
BAA Wanderers football director Kenny Thompson believes the club are slowly reaping the rewards of their youth development system. The Woodlands Road outfit lifted the under-23 Player Development League Tournament on New Year’s Day after defeating a far more experienced Dandy Town in a penalty shoot-out.Hornets included Bermuda internationals such as Damon Ming, Angelo Simmons and Seion Darrell in their side, whereas BAA boasted a side almost entirely made up of teenagers. In last week’s semi-finals, BAA also defeated a North Village team including Keishen Bean and Jemeiko Jennings 5-3, and Thompson said he was encouraged by the progress on the club’s senior side.“We have a really good nucleus of young players that we are bringing through in the first team and they were eligible to play in the PDL Tournament as they are teenagers and we told them to go out and achieve things,” said Thompson, who has completely overhauled the BAA coaching programme since becoming their football director 18 months ago.“Our primary focus is to get them to play excellent football, a good technical and intelligent style of playing and you can start to see it now when they play that they are understanding what is needed of them.“Some of our players last year were playing under-16s and most of them are still in high school, and despite the occasion and relative importance of being in a final they came out and got the job done.”Although Thompson, a former Bermuda national team coach, was delighted to see BAA win a piece of silverware he stressed that achieving results was still not as important as developing talent the right way.“We have worked very hard for the past 18 months to get where are and the players know soon there will come a time when we will be expecting results from them, but for the moment this is a part secondary.“To win the festive tournament is a major boost for the club, the players, the coaching staff and the programme itself.“Losing the competition wouldn’t have changed our focus and at the moment we don’t need results to validate what we are doing, everyone loves to win and we try to win the games we play in, so to win it was very pleasing.Thompson also singled out first team coach Maurice Lowe and his support staff for their contributions since the programme’s inception.“Personally, a lot of praise has to go to the players and the coaching staff who put their time and work into getting ready for the match.BAA, whose senior team are currently sixth in the First Division, are sponsored by Lindo’s, have more than 250 youngsters in their programme.
