Hall impresses on debut at Northampton
Northampton manager Aidy Boothroyd was full of praise for debutant goalkeeper Freddy Hall, who produced a solid display to help the Cobblers edge past Morecambe 2-1 on Saturday.Hall will be hoping to have convinced Boothroyd that he is worth an extended run between the sticks after standing in for injured first choice keeper Shane Higgs, who recently signed for the club.It has been a long wait for Hall to get his chance at the Globe Arena, but he certainly didn’t disappoint when his opportunity finally came along according to Boothroyd, who described the 26-year-old’s performance as “brilliant”.“We’ve lost Shane to a long-term injury; it was a pretty innocuous incident, he just landed and felt his Achilles pop so he’ll be out for a while,” Boothroyd told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo.“Freddy came in and for his first game he was brilliant.”With Higgs facing as long as a year on the sidelines after rupturing an Achilles tendon during training, Boothroyd faces a tough decision whether to stand by untested Hall or draft in a new signing.Although a back-up keeper will have to be brought in as youngster Paul Walker is not considered ready for first team action, it appears Boothroyd may be willing to put his faith in Hall.“I’m going to give it some thought because at some point or another a number two goalkeeper has to step up to be a number one or there’s no point having them,” said Boothroyd.“I like a lot of things about him, Tim Flowers likes a lot about him, he always has a smile on his face and he’s the type of player we want around the club.“I’ll give it a bit of thought and decide what we’re going to do. We are going to need another keeper because Paul Walker isn’t quite ready yet.”Hall, a regular in Bermuda’s recent World Cup qualifying campaign, signed a one-year contract after impressing Town’s coaches in pre-season training. The former St George’s man was mentored and coached by Shaka Hislop at Quinnipiac University, in the US, and is a former Plymouth Argyle trialist.Despite winning their first match in more than three months, and their first in Boothroyd’s six games in charge, Northampton still lie second-bottom of League Two.On Saturday they take on Southend at home.
