Bermuda line up friendly against Antigua

Bermuda on their way to victory against Trinidad in a World Cup qualifier late last year at the National Sports Centre. The Gombey Warriors are likely to take on Antigua in a friendly match next month.

Bermuda’s national team are poised to kick-start their Digicel Cup preparations with a friendly match against in-form Antigua and Barbuda next month, The Royal Gazette can reveal.Talks between the Bermuda Football Association and their Caribbean counterparts are still ongoing but the finer details of the fixture, to be held on February 29, should be ironed out by the end of next week.A source at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association told The Gazette yesterday that the BFA had made the initial contact, but couldn’t confirm which Island would host the match.“Bermuda have definitely inquired and the talks are definitely ongoing. I believe it will be confirmed within the next week and a half,” said the source.“It’s undecided whether we will come (to Bermuda) or if they will come (to Antigua).“We’re still trying to get it finalised, I can’t confirm it because our technical director (Tom Curtis) is trying to get his calendar together properly in terms of who he would like to play.”Having topped their World Cup qualifying group to reach the next stage of the competition, Antigua fit the bill for the BFA who have made no secret of their desire to face “a high calibre” opponent on February 29, a fixed date for Fifa international matches. And with Antigua looking for a stern a test ahead of the next qualifying round to be played in June and July, Bermuda appear to tick all the right boxes following their own impressive campaign, which saw them defeat Caribbean powerhouse Trinidad. For Bermuda, the fixture would also represent a chance to set the record straight against Antigua, having been roundly beaten 4-0 by the Wadalhi Boyz in the 2008 Digicel Cup in the Cayman Islands.Under the stewardship of former Chesterfield and Portsmouth midfielder Tom Curtis, Antigua have gone from strength to strength, jumping up the Fifa World Rankings to 83rd in November their highest ever position. They have since dropped a place to 84th.Curtis, who was appointed Antigua’s technical director and head coach in last March, is also in charge of the Island’s sole professional team, Antigua Barracuda FC, who play in the USL Pro League the division above the Bermuda Hogges.Barracuda, made up primarily of homegrown players, finished their inaugural campaign in ninth position. The Digicel Cup will be held this summer in the Caribbean.
