PHC edge past St George's

PHC 4 St. George’s 3Visiting St. George’s were deflated by two first-half goals but responded with a spirited performance in the second half to give PHC a run for their money in this FA Cup clash at Southampton Oval yesterday.St. George’s fight-back saw them come within a whisker of levelling the score at the end when they pinned down their opponents and with them trailing 4-3 in the dying minutes saw PHC clear the ball, destined for the back of goal, away to safely on at least three occasions in injury time. But St. George’s have themselves to blame for the setback because they offered little in the opening half and allowed pHC to take firm control of the proceedings and it wasn’t a surprise when the home side built a commanding 2-0 lead at the interval.Antwan Rusell gave Zebras a 1-0 lead with a well-struck penalty after 29 minutes and Cecoy Robinson gave them a deserved 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.St. George’s had to play second-fiddle throughout the opening half with a string of misdirected passes when they entered their opponents area and seldon looked confident of creating openings in a defence which seemed to be extraordinarily composed most of the time. But the trend was to change after the break when Jahron Dickinson netted for St. George’s when his angled effort from the left was allowed to slip between the legs of the PHC ‘keeper Troy Hall. But PHC stormed back and rebounded with Rakheem Deshields forcing Zane Hendrickson in the St. George’s goal to push his wicked drive from 16 yards against eh bar and over for a corner. However, before the east-enders could cause too much trouble Shakir Smith re-established PHC’s two-goal lead when he lobed the ball over the head over the head of the advancing Hendrickson.St. George’s refused to throw in the towel and scored through Clay Darrell after 72 minutes by putting home his angled shot from the right about 15 yards out.But PHC responded a minute later with Shakir Smith scoring from an angle on the left to make it 4-2.St. George’s were allowed to come into the game with momentum after this with Jahron Dickinson, strangely unmarked from close range, netted to make it 4-3 and five minutes later he narrowly came to getting the equaliser when his free kick from the end of the panelty box was sensationally pushed around the post by goalkeeper Hall. Two minutes from time the east-enders pressed for the equaliser with strikerr Angelo Cannonier heading over from nine yards and PHC’s defence, hard pressed at the time, forced to scramble three balls clear of the goal-line in injury time.
