Village too strong for Rangers
North Village came out with all guns blazing and built a commanding 3-0 lead by the half but allowed the home side to claw their way back into contention and make a game of it in this FA Cup quarter-final at Southampton Oval yesterday..Rangers were sluggish in the opening half while Village lacked spark in the second of a contest that proved to be extremely mediocre overall.Village snatched a foothole of the game early after Vernon Tankard put them ahead with his screaming liner astonishingly slipping between the legs of goalkeeper Sean Perinchief.Village could have made it 2-0 after 18 minutes when Andre Russell fouled Devrae Russell but Sammy Degraff had his poorly struck penalty kick saved by Perinchief in the Rangers goal.Village were not too disheartened by the miscue because they responded positively and continued to cominate their jaded opponents who offered very little in the terms of attacking.The one-way traffic saw Ralph Bean cross a ball into the middle after 23 minutes only to see an out of touch Degraff mis-hit from a position he should have scored from.After 38 minutes Jemaiko Jennings would not show any similar faulty finishing when he stormed home a ball from 34 yards to make it 2-0.Rangers replied with striker Kyle Jones having two shots hurried wide of the post before Village got their third from Jason Lee when he latched onto a cross from hard-working midfielder Jennings.The second half saw Village strangely lose their touch with the home side producing some lively football and keeping Village pinned in their half for a few lengthy spells.Jones made it 3-1 with a fierce dipping shot from 22 yards after a minute of the restart.Village though absorbed a lot of the pressure built up by Rangers before Vernon Perinchief finally got through toi make it 3-2 with their second goal from close in after 79 minutes.Dakai Grant and Jennings came close to scoring for Village afterwards, but Village finally got the fourth goal when Degrass netted a penalty after Andre Russell fouled Jahguan Deshields in injury time.Southampton Rangers: S Perinchief; A Russell, K Simmons, M Williams, M Tankard (I Mallory 36 min), M Burch (K Symonds, 73 min), J Charles, V Perinchief, C Castle, R Lowe (D Russell, 55 min), K JonesSubstitutes not used: J Caisey, R Lowe, Y Bean, T FordNorth Village: J Williams; T Burgess, D Grant, D Tankard, K Dill, J Davis, R Bean (K Dill, 80 min), S Degraff, J Jennings, J Lee, V TankardSubstitutes not used: C Boyce, T WatsonMan of the match: J.
