Defence will be the key to victory, says Russell

Antwan Russell believes defence be the key in determining who comes out on top in tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash at St John’s Field tomorrow between PHC and Dandy Town.Hornets currently sit at the top of the Digicel Premier Division with 30 points, while their nearest rivals PHC are only two points behind heading into the showdown. The standings will certainly change this weekend, with third place North Village playing Robin Hood at BAA Field tonight and can close their five point gap to just two before the tomorrow’s clash.Acknowledging the importance of the game at hand, PHC skipper Russell reckons it will be the defence, not the two sides highly powered attacks that decides the outcome of the all-important game.“It’s another game, but a big game in terms of title aspirations and it will go a long way into determining where we stand because we are chasing them,” said Russell, the league’s top goalscorer.“Both teams can score goals so it will come down to whose defence is sturdier then the other, that will ultimately determine the winner.“It can go both ways, but we want the result that puts us back on top, and with the gap and margin of error getting smaller it is vital to get results now.”A defeat for Town wouldn’t be the end of the world but with matches on the horizon against Village and Devonshire Cougars, they would want to wrap the title up as swiftly as possible. For Zebras, however, a loss would see them five points adrift and with only a handful of games remaining their fate would be firmly out of their hands. The reverse fixture at Southampton Oval ended with a 3-2 for Zebras, a result they hope to repeat.“A lose and we’re not out of it, but that will put a lot of pressure on us for the rest of the season,” added Russell.“If we can play our game we should be okay, we know that we can play with them and it’s just a matter of going on the field and getting the job done.“There is a lot of football to be played but we will be putting ourselves in a hole if we should lose but that’s nothing that we are thinking of.”Elsewhere in Premier Division action, Village take on Robin Hood tonight at BAA Field at 9pm as they look to apply pressure on the top two ahead of their match.St David’s make the trek to Southampton Oval to lock horns with Southampton Rangers, while Boulevard are also on the road when they go to Somerset Cricket Club to play Somerset Trojans. All games kick off at 3pm.
