Hat-trick was on the cards, says Wells
Bradford City striker Nahki Wells said it was “only a matter of time” before he struck his maiden professional hat-trick.The Bermudian netted a superb treble to inspire the Bantams to a vital 3-1 away win against Northampton Town at Sixfields Stadium at the weekend.Wells, who has now scored 11 goals this season, struck in the 11th, 39th and 59th minutes to help City all but secure their League Two status.“Regardless of who it was against, it was just a matter of time really before I scored a hat-trick,” the ex-Dandy Town player told The Royal Gazette. “Once I scored the early goal I had that feeling that today would be the day to get the hat-trick.“As soon as I got the second I felt it was only a matter of time for the third to come because realistically it’s all about confidence, and I had all the confidence in the world.”Wells reached the milestone at a critical stage of the hard-fought match with a sublime finish just seconds after Northampton’s captain Clarke Carlisle scored to shave the visitor’s lead to one.“It was the best feeling in the world but to be honest it was a relief because they had scored to make it 2-1 just before I scored my third goal,” he said. “Right after they scored we went straight down the field and I scored, and to know we had restored our two -goal lead was the main thing.“I wasn’t even thinking about the hat- trick. It was just a relief because if I didn’t score that goal we probably would’ve lost. Northampton were piling the pressure like crazy and to go straight down the other end and score was a big relief. I’m just happy for the all the boys.”City boss Phil Parkinson said Wells’ third goal was huge in the grand scheme of things.“When you look at the moment of Nahki’s third, it was a big one for us,” he stated on City’s website. “The goal they got back was obviously going to lift the crowd but we just killed that straight away with Nahki’s effort.“All three goals were great finishes, and his pace was a real threat.”Wells was eventually substituted in the 78th minute after suffering cramp.“I wanted to play out the whole match because I felt I could’ve gotten a fourth of fifth goal because the confidence was just flowing like that,” he said. “But I started to cramp in my calf and I didn’t want to cost us a goal because I couldn’t make a sprint, so I told the gaffer (Parkinson) it’s probably best I come off because he kept asking me.”Present at Sixfields Stadium to witness Wells’ milestone was compatriot Freddy Hall who was a substitute on the Northampton bench.“Freddy came to see me right before the match and told me ‘good luck and do my thing’,” Wells said. “He told me what he expected from me and I just went out there and done it.“He’s a fellow Bermudian who knows my ability and he was just happy for me after the game, even though it was against his team.”City now only require a solitary point from their remaining three matches to retain their League Two status.“It’s a good feeling to know that we are nearly one hundred percent safe in the league,” Wells said. “It’s also a relief for our fans.”
