Boulevard Blazers have given 13 players the boot as part of sweeping changes to rid the problem-plagued club of their social ills. It’s understood the entire squad underwent a rigorous screening and vetting process to weed out those players who no longer reflected the long-term vision of the club. The bold move is a direct response to the problematic past 12 months that saw Boulevard’s name dragged through the mud en route to relegation from the Premier Division.Troubles, both on and off the field, blighted last season with the club having to withdraw from the Friendship Trophy due to safety concerns and forfeit a league fixture because of a shortage of players. It’s believed many of their players were fearful of travelling to the West End due to gang-related issues.Blazers president Lou Matthews admitted the second tier outfit had “lost sight of their community values” and therefore required radical changes.“The club has committed to some sweeping changes in order to reconnect to a community that we had lost sight of and we know these changes are a step in the right direction,” he said in a statement.“After considering the direction of our club we made a decision not to renew the contract of 13 of our First Division players. We are thankful for their service to the club in the past and wish them all the best in the future.“Football in Bermuda has to be more than just a game on Sunday. Football must represent hope.“It must introduce our young men and women to a better way of life, a life that through team-work, sacrifice, community engagement, caring and sharing we can take positive steps to a better Bermuda.”As part of the club’s ‘Agenda for Renewal’, all players out of work are required to be actively seeking employment or education. The club are also looking to re-establish links with Victor Scott Primary School and set up a Under-10 team to play in Bermuda Football Association’s youth leagues.Matthews, who was voted in for his second stint as president in November, 2010, added: “Boulevard are committed to forward steps; we know that this journey will not be an easy one. We have committed to lifestyle changes: these changes are radical and we know that the will be uncomfortable at first, but in the end we know that our community will be better because of it.”Boulevard finished ninth in the Premier Division last season with 12 points.
