Khano excited by coaching opportunity
Khano Smith has admitted his new coaching role with his former club New England Revolution was a once in a lifetime opportunity he could not pass up.Smith has joined the MLS side’s coaching staff, becoming John Frederick’s assistant coach for their under-18 side for the upcoming season. The Bermuda captain had two stints at the club, helping them to the MLS Cup final during his first term with the Revolution.“It feels good to help the youth academy of the club that I once played for and pass down my knowledge and experiences,” said the 31-year-old.“I got with the under-18s last year they asked me to come and help out at sessions if I could, this year they formally asked me to join the staff.“I have my USSF B license, USSF National Youth License and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and this will help me to further my coaching knowledge.”Smith is expected to be named in Andrew Bascome’s squad for next month’s Digicel Caribbean Cup, although the winger does not believe it makes sense for the group games to be held in Haiti.“In terms of the Digicel Cup, I always want to play for Bermuda but I am not happy that we have to go to Haiti and why Bermuda can’t host it I don’t know,” he said.“There is no way where a country that had a major earthquake two years ago should host it and we can’t.“Having said that, I haven’t heard from anyone in the Bermuda Football Association and I’m waiting patiently to see what transpires.”Smith, who skipped Bermuda in last year’s World Cup qualifiers, took his first steps on the coaching ladder with New Hampshire Cobras Soccer Club last year, with the club being a partner of Smith’s former side Revolution.
