Hall mistake costs Toronto against Kansas
A late blunder by goalkeeper Freddy Hall cost Toronto against in-form Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference at the weekend. With the score level at 1-1 and with just minutes remaining, Oriol Rossell’s tame first-time shot from the edge of the box somehow squirmed its way through the fingertips of Hall to condemn Toronto to defeat. It was a poor mistake by the former St George’s shot stopper who had impressed between the sticks prior to his costly error in the 87th minute.Toronto took the lead through striker Ryan Johnson who fired home a minute from half-time, but found themselves pegged back on the hour mark when Paulo Nagamura equalised with a volley which took a wicked deflection past Hall.Paul Mariner, Toronto’s coach, believed his side deserved a share of the spoils.“I felt we set up really well against a very good Kansas team,” Mariner said. “We had a very inexperienced team out. We tried to hit them on the break, which we did. Ryan Johnson hits the post and if it goes in it might be a different game. And then Luis Silva had a couple of great opportunities later on.“It just wasn’t to be. We put in another great shift and I firmly believe we’re not very far away from turning the corner.”Toronto take on Chicago Fire at home next Wednesday.
