Hornets target winning start against Village

Dandy Town will be taking the Charity Cup as seriously as any other game according to assistant coach Antoine Tuzo as they prepare to start their season in the annual curtain raiser against North Village. The defending Digicel Premier Division champions will clash against last year’s runners up and beaten FA Cup finalists at the newly named Goose Gosling Field at 8pm on Saturday.Village lifted the Charity Cup last year after defeating Devonshire Cougars, but will be up against an arguably more accomplished opponent this time around, a foe that has certainly had the Rams’ number in recent seasons.“We are taking the game as serious as any other game, although it is the first game of the season, but for the most part we are taking the game like any other game and want to get off on the right foot heading into the season,” said Tuzo.“It is like a final run out for the side before the real games come and we want to be ready for everything that comes our way. It’s one game and ninety minutes so we will try and keep our tactics and see how far along we have come in our pre season.“What you put in is what you get out and we want to put out a strong effort for both the club and our fans.”Town had the better of the exchanges between the two clubs last term, including their 5-2 mauling of Village at the National Sports Centre in the FA Cup final. The result was a reversal of the two sides last meeting in the league, although the St John’s Road club had already wrapped up the title by then.Despite losing promising brothers Tymon and Tristian Daniels to First Division X’Roads, Hornets have strengthened their squad with newcomers Aquino Grant from PHC, and Boulevard trio Temiko Wilson, Ajani Gibbons and Reiko Trott.Village have also lost key members of their side with skipper Sammy DeGraff retiring and Tyrell Burgess moving to Somerset Trojans. While it will take time for the new players to settle at the club, Tuzo believes it will only be a matter of time before they are firing on all cylinders.“The result won’t have any bearing on what we do going forward in the season, any team is beatable on the day and we aren’t going into the season thinking we are the team to beat even though we are the champions,” he said.“We have some new faces in the team so we will the game as a gelling process to see who can play with who and how certain things will work out for us, with that being said we still have the harmony that we previously had and we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves in looking at who we have brought in.“Last season is exactly that, last season, and we will look to start fresh and regain what we won last year as well as compete for all the other honours as well.”
