Weldon still has killer touch

Devonshire Colts 2 BAA 1Veteran striker Ellington Weldon helped Devonshire Colts to an opening day victory when he netted in the 83rd minute to deny battling BAA a share of the points at Police Field yesterday.Weldon, now 43 and with a son among the Colts substitutes and wearing his dad’s former number 17, pounced to score past former Colts keeper Kevin Bean who allowed a low shot from Carlos Trott to escape his clutches after the ball bounced in front of him.The goal came just as Colts were getting a second wind after BAA had fought their way back early in the second half and threatened to take the lead.BAA brought on Vance Hill and Dante Taylor at the start of the second half and their immediately started to offer more threats in attack as Hill laid on a cross for Ryan Tyrell whose initial shot was parried by the Colts keeper Greg Rose before Tyrell put the rebound over the bar.BAA were starting to create some good openings and in the 55th minute they wiped out the Colts lead when their two subs combined again.Hill provided the cross from the left and Taylor’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar and dropped over the line.Only a smart save by the alert Rose denied BAA a second goal in the 76th minute when Tyrell’s curling shot from distance looked headed for the far top corner before Rose scrambled back to tip the ball over the bar.The best chances in the first half were created by Devonshire Colts as Carlos Trott and Terry Foote both shot wide before midfielder Kiuno Cann broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a smart finish, curling the ball into the top corner after taking a return pass on the edge of the penalty box.Late in the half Tyrell lobbed an effort just over the bar after spotting the Colts keeper off his line.Boulevard 0 St. David’s 2St David’s got their promotion push off to a winning start as they beat hosts Boulevard 2-0 at Goose Gosling Field courtesy of Shakil Robinson and Fiqre Crockwell goals.In a battle between the two relegation sides from last term, it was an evenly contested match in front an excited opening day crowd.Both clubs took an aggressive approach to the match and either could have taken the lead until youngster Robinson helped himself to his and the game’s first goal in the 37th minute after being the recipient of a lapse of concentration in the Blazers defence.Boulevard created chances of their own but they missed both the crucial final ball and the killer instinct in front of goal, allowing chances to go begging without a final product.Crockwell scored the Islanders’ all-important second goal midway through the second half which dashed Boulevard’s hopes of an opening day win.Elsewhere, Prospect United hit six past Paget at White Hill Field in a 6-2 rout. Ge-Von Greaves scored twice and David Urbina added a third in the first half before Ronald Bell made it 4-0 after the restart.Milton Vernaza and Leroy Mathurin added further Prospect goals while Dijuan Simons and Andrew Warren replied for Paget.Hamilton Parish got past Somerset Eagles 3-0 in the second match at White Hill Field while the match between Ireland Rangers and X-Roads at Malabar Field was not played as only one official showed up.
