Wolves look to Vickers to lead the way
Wolves coach Don Vickers admitted he will be tackling a different beast this season when he leads the First Division champions back into the Digicel Premier Division.Vickers left X’Roads in the off season to help player/boss John Barry Nusum who has now given up his coaching post to focus fully on his game.In his first leading role at the helm of a top flight club, he conceded he has his work cut out as Wolve look to make their mark.“It will be a tough task but at the same time I’m relishing the chance to help the club in reaching their goals,” said Vickers. “I’m taking over a very good side that has loads of potential and if we are able to play to our potential then we should do fairly well in the division.“The level is definitely higher (from the First Division) and will take some getting used to but I’m a teacher and that is the first and foremost point I will instil in the side, to help the younger players learn the game more and to know what to do in certain situations as the game plays itself out.“At the end of the day it is about improving Bermuda’s football and that is what my goal is for the team.”Under the guidance of Nusum, the club ran away with the First Division title last season, losing just one of their 20 league fixtures while losing to Dandy Town in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.They have been bolstered by the arrival of veteran striker Aljame Zuill, while fellow attacker Dane Simmons will return to his boyhood club along with Rangers defender Michael Williams and striker McLee Smith. With a squad that boasts skipper Jared Peniston, Hobte Burrows, Troy Tucker and Vincent Minors jr, there will be high expectations for the side get results against many of the clubs in the top flight.“A lot of the expectation will rely on us performing to a standard that will allow us to reach our targets, the players will need to do their jobs in order to be looked at as good players.“To stay in the top flight is our main target and we want to get to this mark at the very least.“If the players use the skill and play within themselves then the results should be favourable. If we can put some intelligence and insight into our play we can do well but the structure and balance of the side has to remain the same at all times.”Wolves open their league campaign with a stern test against last year’s runner-ups North Village as Bernard Park.
